Title: Directors who can only be successful during a short period of time
Post by: The Burgomaster on July 24, 2003, 05:38:22 PM
Did you ever notice that certain directors can be wildly popular for a few years, but then they disappear? They seem to fit in well with certain trends or fads, but they don't evolve as the times change?

One example is John Hughes. He had several teenage "brat pack" hits during the 1980s, but he never really changed with the times. He was wildly popular during the days of leg-warmers and really bad music, but he sort of lost touch when the fads and lifestyles of the 1980s disappeared.

Who are some others that come to mind?

I don't know about Hughes--he seemed to have big success with HOME ALONE which was very different from his Eighties output, but you're right that his success didn't last throughout the Nineties.

I'm wondering if Quentin Tarrantino will be able to hang on....

tarrantino hasn't really done too much in a while that had the same impact as classics like pulp fiction, but he has dabbled in a few short films and a few acting parts.  also from what i've heard, he's a pretty meticulous planner so no wonder his next film has taken ten years to come out ['kill bill'] but nevertheless i'm hoping for a return to form and am eagerly awaiting kill bill whether it be a two parter film or not.  the footage i've seen so far has certainly sparked my interest.

maybe i'm sensing a comeback? here's hoping...

It surely seems like ten years, even though it's been six since Quentin T. hasn't made a new film, but at least he didn't receive the same fate that the likes of Jeff Burr,Anthony Hickox, and Kevin Tenney did.
BTW:where the frigging hell is Jim Van Bebber, and whaever hapened to that Charlie manson flick he's been proudly flaunting around for what seems like so many, many years now?

Hal Needham pretty much dropped off the radar after comedy car chase movies enjoyed a few years of popularity in the late 70s and early 80s. Maybe Megaforce was his idea of changing with the times.

I dont know many directors who suffer from this, mainly because they have disappeared.

But, how about the guy who did Swingers and Go, is he copying his mentor and inferior, Quentin T. into a 6 year hiatus.

I also havent heard anything from the "hottest young director" M. Night Shyamalan for awhile, where did he go.... to acting school I hope.

From the IMDb:

Two Movies for the Price of One

Instead of releasing Quentin Tarantino's latest film Kill Bill, starring Uma Thurman, in its current three-hour-plus length or asking the director to cut it, Miramax is now planning to release it in two parts, published reports said today (Wednesday). The first part is due to be released on Oct. 10. Daily Variety commented: "Cutting Kill Bill into two seems to be an elegant solution since Tarantino gets to release all of his three-hour pic, while (Harvey) Weinstein gets a 90-minute movie (albeit two of them)." Today's New York Times pointed out that the story is told in chapters and therefore lends itself to a serial approach. "I've always designed the movie, thought about the film, as malleable in any number of versions," Tarantino told the newspaper in a statement. He suggested that there may be different versions for Asia and Europe.

I haven't read much about the movie (I want to be surprised when I see it), but I think it's cool that he's taking a "grindhouse" route. Say what you will about the guy, he loves his b-movies (as amply proved by From Dusk Til Dawn).
