Title: long lost movie
Post by: Anonymous User on August 05, 2003, 01:19:44 PM
Hi, I'm new to the site.  I've been a huge old Horror movie fan for 40 years.  My mom took me to ALL the movies growing up in a small West Virginia town.  I paid to see JAWS 7 times in a row. I need help on a movie I'd like to see.  I only saw the preview of this film when I was a kid.  It absolutely terrified me.  I've always wanted to see it, but in 40 years I've never come across it.  The older I get the more I realized it must have been a low budget film that didn't get much attention, and I venture to say it might be quite comical now.

WHEN? The preview was show before (either) THE BIBLE or 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY.  That would put it's theatrical release somewhere around 1966-68.

PLOT? The movie had people stranded on an island (maybe after a storm) and the plants came alive and would catch the people.  The only shot I can remember (I was 3-5 years old) was a guy with an ax chopping off the tentacle-like arm of a plant and blood poring (gushing) out of the stem.  At that point I'd had enough and covered my eyes and ears because I couldn't take anymore.

VIVID IMAGINATION? The trouble is....the movie may not be about "man eating plants."  I remember asking my mom to take me to see "the movie with the giant snake."  Turns out it was SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON.....remember the scene with the python attacking James McArthur (from Hawaii 5-0).....not really the plot of the movie, yet that's how I remembered it.

I'm not sure how "coming attractions" worked in the mid 60's.  I've never thought this was a low budget movie for the second feature at a drive-in simply because it was shown before a BIG movie (THE BIBLE or 2001) but I could be wrong.

I would welcome any suggestions

Thanks
brad

Here are some things it might be.  (List is not all inclusive.)

La Isla de la Muerte (1967, a.k.a. Island of the Doomed, Man Eater of Hydra)
IMDB http://imdb.com/Details?0059215

The Lost Continent (1968)
IMDB: http://imdb.com/Title?0063240
Man-eating seaweed.

Island of Terror (1966)
IMDB: http://imdb.com/Title?0060548
Not about man eating plants, but has that tentical/axe thing in it.  Sort of.

Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)
IMDB: http://imdb.com/Details?0059125

Mad Monster Party (1967)
IMDB: http://imdb.com/Title?0061931
Nah.  Just kidding.

I'd love to find out what this is.

regards,

Apostic

PS (Long story) - As a child, I was deeply creeped out by a scene from a movie about a faceless man burning women by making them touch a large sphere.  A few short years later, I told some of my friends about the scene; they told me it was Sting of Death.  FF to within the last couple of years.  Sting of Death came out on DVD, but I couldn't match what was in the preview with what I saw.  I chalked it up to how a child sees things and moved on.  But then I saw Blood and Black Lace.  Mystery solved.  Moral: Happy hunting.

Along with Apostic's list, try  Navy v. the Night Monsters  (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0060741).  I almost said  Day of the Triffids  (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0055894) myself, but the time frame's off a bit.

Good luck!

I agree with Cullen . . . I think NAVY VS. THE NIGHT MONSTERS might be the one you are looking for.

By coincidence, Dr. Terror's House of Horrors was on TV this past weekend.  Scene as described does not appear.

In regards to Cullen's "Navy vs. the Night Monsters" suggestion; I agree, that sounds the most like what you've described. NVTNM concerns a US Navy base on a South Sea island under seige by ambulatory prehistoric shrubs brought in by an ill-fated arctic (!) expedition. The plants "bleed" acid when cut, and also kill their victims in this matter. The movie starred Anthony Eisley and Mamie Van Doren and was released in 1966, but may have still been making the rounds two years later (as many B movies did in those days.) It's available on VHS and, I think, on DVD also via Englewood Ent. Check it out.
