I was reading the Burgomaster’s “Movies that should have had sequels†thread, seeing all the Buckaroo Banzai (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0086856) mentions, and a stray thought entered my tiny little mind. Banzai did have a sequel of a sort. Big Trouble in Little China (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0090728)started out as “Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime Leagueâ€. It’s a bit of a stretch to see this in China’s finished form, but Lo Pan seems (to me any way), to be in the same position as Hanoi Xan, Banzai’s ultimate nemesis.
This thought naturally lead to Cyborg (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0097138). That film started its misbegotten existence as a sequel to the strangely hypnotic Masters of the Universe (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0093507). From there I went to Godzilla v. the Sea Monster (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0060464)( which was intended to be a sequel to King Kong Escapes (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0061868) â€" explaining somewhat the really weak foe Ebira) and King Kong v. Godzilla (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0056142) (which started out as a sequel to the original Kong that mutated in numerous ways). And so on.
The point of this thread (assuming that there is one) is this question: Can any of you think of a sequel that mutated into a totally different movie?

Hello Mary Lou - Prom Night 2 had nothing to do with the Jamie Lee Curtis movie. Halloween 3 was the strangest acid trip ever, and the less said about Highlander 2 the better!
Some sequels just make you go WTF?!?!?!?
Nightmare On Elm Street 2 was only vaguely related to the first
Anything after OMEN III
Any of the AMITYVILLE movies
Trancers 2-6. Through five they had many of the same characters (Thomerson, LaFleur) but they kept changing the definition of "Trancer" so much that it's hard to build any sort of internal consistancy
HALLOWEEN III, of course.
ILSA, THE WICKED WARDEN was retitled to capitalize on the ILSA movies--it was originally called WANDA, THE WICKED WARDEN. About the only thing it has in common with the earlier films is Dyanne Thorne.

Unless, of course, you're writing the review for Jabootu.com. Then pile it on, brother.
Thanks to Italian marketing wisdom, half of the movies given a "Zombie #" title (usually one of many alternate titles) not only have nothing to do with the original "Zombie" (which was, of coures, originally "Zombie 2", being itself an unrelated sequel to "Dawn of the Dead" -- see how these things get started?), but actually CONTAIN NO ZOMBIES WHATSOEVER.
I suppose I shouldn't complain about that; after all, how many metallic flowers were in "Steel Magnolias"?

Not to mention the book "The catcher in the Rye".
Tons of spaghetti westerns that capitalized on a star or a trend by being renamed to sound like a sequel to something else. Trinity or Sabata in the title can be misleading.
Any sequel to "The Magnificent Seven" after the first sequel with Yul Brynner. Different actors played the character Chris but have no real connection to the first film.
"Futureworld" has next to nothing to do with "Westworld" beyond the first film providing some of the backstory and that idiotic dream sequence Blythe Danner has with Yul Brynner's Robot Cowboy walking around to justify using his image to promote the film.
"Xtro 2"
most "Howling" sequels
