Title: Movies that should NOT have had sequels
Post by: Gerry on August 06, 2003, 12:52:09 PM
After reading with interest the "should have had sequels" thread, I thought it might be interesting to list original movies that kicked ass and should never have been followed up with a string of crappy sequels.

Here are a few to get things started:

HIGHLANDER - there should have been only one!!!
BEASTMASTER
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
CITY SLICKERS
THE BIRDS

The Magnificent Seven (had *two* sequals, iirc)

Didn't the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN actually have THREE sequels?

* RETURN OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

* GUNS OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

* THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN RIDE

Some others that should not have had sequels are:

* JAWS

* THE OMEN

* THE STING (the sequel was really a fake sequel . . . but I'm listing it anyway)

* CADDYSHACK

* WALKING TALL (actually, it SHOULD have had sequels, but the sequels they made were pretty bad . . . )

 I agree 100% with Highlander.

There was really NO point in Halloween III with the masks and the bugs and the exploding and the It Hurts Me , hey hey hey.

Die Hard - No comment

Men in Black

The Benji movies

Meatballs

Halloween III would have done better had it just been a stand-alone movie.

It's a sequel in itself, but I think DAWN OF THE DEAD should have been the end of Romero's zombie series.  What better moment to end on than the triumphant dead taking up residence in the mall?   I know some love it, but I didn't think DAY OF THE DEAD really added anything worth saying that Romero hadn't already said in the previous two films.  And I've seen the original script and I think that would have been even worse.

....which was fine in itself, and the first three SW films are classics....BUT the current crop of films that Lucas is shoving down our throats were really unneeded, IMHO. I've only seen PHANTOM MENACE, and was actually disappointed in it, and was becoming uncomfortable at the overblown CGI work that was being slammed into my eyeballs. Haven't seen ATTACK OF THE CLONES yet, but from the previews it looks like even MORE of the same CGI overdose (although I have to admit to wanting to see Yoda face off with Christopher Lee!). God only knows what the next movie is going to look like (although I have to admit to wanting to see the transformation of Anakin into Vader).

Return of the Living Dead:
Probably my favorite zombie movie, but the two sequels were VERY disappointing.  I don't know what they were going for in the second one, it was like a comedy version of the first... and I HATED that little kid.  Tarman shoulda taken a huge bite out of his head in the first 5 minutes of the movie.  The third one I liked better than the second, but it still sucked.

Tomb Raider:
Never seen the first or the second but I've heard negative things about both of them.

Final Destination 2:
I screamed WHY!? at the screen when I first saw the trailor for this movie in a theater.  Everyone else didn't seem to mind me yelling this, guess they felt the same.  I'll probably DL it or something...

Legally Blonde 2:
Words alone cannot describe the amount of contempt I have for this movie ever being made.  It make me want to hurt things.

Men In Black 2:  It coulda been done a LOT better.  The cartoon that used to come on the WB was good... this movie was trash.

That's all I can think of right now...

BTW, I thought the Die Hard sequels were damn good.  Not better than the original, but really good.

Robocop.  At the very least, the 3rd should never have happened.  The 2nd was pretty bad, but I did get to see a few poorly-adjusted cyborgs freak out.  The one that pulled it's metal head off (thus exposing the screaming skull) was a riot.

Did you watch the Robocop Prime Directives miniseries?

The two Robocop series (both the animated and the live action) were the only things that could have made "Robocop III" look good.

Anybody seen "The last  seduction 2"? The first one is great, but this one is a complete turd. Just imagine there is almost no sex in it! And starring Joan Severance of all actresses!

Prequals always seem to be so bad.

Evidence:

Star Wars
Dumb and Dumberer
Cruel Intentions 2.

Leave the past in the past i guess.

They should have stopped with the sequels after Micheal Myers got his head chopped off in H20.  The next one sucked big time.

Yeah, Halloween III should have stood alone.   I liked Amityville II, but its more of a prequel, portraying the DeFeo family murders.  And I liked the death scene at the end.  It's pretty graphic when children are shot by their own brother.  They shouldn't have made Return Part II, cuz they ranked on the first one, and that kid was a little pain in the ass.(I never saw him in any other movies, either.)  Day of the Dead rules.  I like it because it's full of gore.  Oh, and Halloween 5 sucked ass too.
