Is it me or is anyone else disappointed with most of the programming that Spike (formerly TNN) is putting out?
They brag about being the first network for men but if this is their best effort then they won't go far in my opinion.
I can't really put my finger on what they seem to be doing wrong.
The lineup of shows are rather dull.
Gary the Rat stinks & Stripperella is so so.
The new Ren & Stimpy is ok other than the title..."Adult Party Cartoon"...what the heck is up with that title?
I like that they show WWE on Monday nights and Star Trek TNG all the time because I'm a Trek freak.
When I think of a network for men, I think of raunchy funny shows like The Man Show and such. I'm talking about the really funny s**t.
Maxim magazine is a perfect example of how Spike should be. Maxim covers all aspects of male humor and what guys like in general whether it be the hottest new cars or fine babes. Spike seems to try to acknowledge these things but they always fall short of being interesting.
In my opinion, Spike seems to be the first network for young adult males who have never been laid.
And they always show those annoying graphics for upcoming shows at the bottom of the screen when the feature is on. And almost ALL commercials during breaks are the same ones.
It's sad because Spike could be awesome but they are not. It's even worse when you can probably guess that its programming is chosen by men.
What do you think?

What did you think of Slam Ball and the Extreme Elimination Challenge(dubbed contest from Japan) ?
wow, I haven't checked in here in a long time. heh.
Anyway, I kinda liked it as The new TNN because Real TV is always a decent watch and Most extreme elimination challenge is hilarious. thats all I watch on the channel though.
Yes, I really enjoy Extreme Elimination Challenge. Anyone here like Scare Tactics on Sci-Fi Channel?
I'm personally disgusted at what you claim men "want to see."
The Man Show was trash. I'm sorry, but it was. It set forth the lowest common denominator, reveled in fart jokes and bouncing boobies, and then put forth the message "If you don't like this, you're not really a man, because all males are stupid enough to think the same joke every five minutes is funny"
Basicly, it said "We as males are exactly the scum that women say we are. We think of nothing but sports, poo jokes, beer, and boobies. We are not capable of sofisticated humor, and we are as ignorant as you think we are."
Sorry if I offend, but I don't like men reveling in the ignorance that society is trying to foist on us. We're better than that. Most monkeys are better than that.
I was never a big fan either, but I always thought the Man Show was meant largely ironically. I thought I read once that the majority of the audience were women.
And yeah, MXC notwithstanding, Spike TV is pretty dull. The new Ren & Stimpy isn't nearly as good as the old stuff (at least from the episode I've seen), and everything else is basically the same as it was before they slapped "Men's" over everything. I'm beginning to see why Spike Lee didn't want to be associated with it.
I can recall reading books like Shane and To Kill A Mockingbird and others of times before and for some reason the image and expectations of what it takes to be a Man seem somewhat cheapened today
>I'm personally disgusted at what you claim men "want to see."
I agree! Don't they know that what men really want to see are intelligent, useful shows that can actually teach us how to do something important? I'd write more, but I have a 3 hour special on knitting that I've been meaning to get to...
Amen, Freep.
Very true.
There is MAD TV, there is SMOKING GUN TV, why not MAXIM TV. Put it on from 10:00 to 10:30 each night or make it an hour long once a week. Do just what they do in the magazine. I think it translates well.
Also, why not make each night themed. I mean like Gear Head Monday (drag races and demo derby type stuff), Sportspage Tuesday (fantasy sports updates, Sporting News TV), Self-Improvement Wednesday (mens health, workout stuff, eating tips), Hardware Thursday (build a deck, drive a talk), Friday Guy Movie (Caddyshack, Animal House, Aaahhhnold Movies).
Wait a minute, I need to send these jokers a resume.
