Title: John Carpenter's Music
Post by: Ash on August 26, 2003, 09:19:51 PM
In the previous "Escape From New York" thread I mentioned John Carpenter's self composed keyboard music.

I was wondering which of you actually like this stuff he churns out and puts on the soundtracks to his films?

In my honest opinion I personally think its some of the worst 80's trash keyboard crap I've ever heard.
I think it actually detracts from his films.

Newer films of his such as "Ghosts of Mars" have better music but not by much.

"Vampires" had,  in my opinion,  the best of his music.

What do you think?

Personally, I like his stuff. But maybe I'm blinded by Carpenter's ambitious nature. The title theme for In The Mouth Of Madness which he co-wrote is excellent as well.

I liked "In The Mouth Of Madness" and "Ghosts Of Mars".  Other than that I don't particularly remember noticing his music much

Well, well, well, what's this lurking in my tape collection?  "John Carpenter's Greatest Hits"?  Hmm. Guess I must like his music after all!  And I prefer his keyboard stuff to the more guitary work on Ghosts of Mars or Mouth of Madness.

Don't forget, you can't credit any of The Thing soundtrack to JC, that was Ennio Morricone.  Still gloomy and sombre, though.

Well, I do like it as well, and I also prefer his keyboard stuff over his newer works. I think his music really helps to create the mood. C'on, who could forget the Halloween theme? Or the fantastic End Credits from "Starman"? I could agree on that "Vampires" is one of his best works, though.

I liked Carpenter's music in his early films. But I think he has worn it out now.

check out one of his earlier movies called Darkstar. The musical score in that one sounded like he drank to much Scotch and fell asleep on an old Casio keyboard.

Well, if  you like the music from HALLOWEEN. Then get to Scranton, Pa this Saturday and Sunday for the Senior Drum and Bugle World Championships. The San Fransisco Renegades show is called "Red Skies at Night: Midnight in the Stadium of Good and Evil.” They also proclaim themselves to be the loudest band in the world. The show opens and closes with the theme music from HALLOWEEN and the rest inbetween is from MATRIX. Each Corps show last 11 minutes. Simply awesome.
