Title: kinda OT:Well...I'm Learning Dungeons and Dragons...don't hurt me.
Post by: Dave:Blackeye15 on September 18, 2003, 02:00:08 PM
For I while I've wanted to learn the Dungeons and Dragons game for a few years but never got into it. I finally did, when I was up in Ashland for the Shakesphere Festivel my brother brought along with him the Dungeons and Dragons players guide. I started reading it when he bought this comic called "Knights of the Dinner Table" and I thought: that looks like fun actually. What's kept me going was hoping there would be cool quests like "Lord of the Rings" and cool battles like in "Conan the Barbarian" I have yet to find a group and find time but sooner or later I'll play a game. Oh yeah! Elf Monk Kenshiro will beat all enemies thrown at him with his Fist of Death!

What a nerd.

Actually, years and years ago, I played D and D myself.  My brother still plays it, along with a ton of other RPGs, and he's just a bit younger than I am.  Nothing wrong with playing the games, as far as I'm concerned.

Now if you're dressing up like your character, then...

Yeah I know how people who are associated with D&D are nerds but that's just a sterotype. Actually I'm just learning it so I can't be called a nerd yet.

Title: Magic the Gathering
Post by: Ash on September 18, 2003, 10:13:36 PM
I never got into D&D but I had many friends that did.

I sat in and watched a few games and frankly it bored the s**t out of me.
D&D was never really my cup of tea.

I did however get heavily into Magic the Gathering trading card game in the late 90's and still play the occasional game when I can.

The only reason I don't play as much as I did is because of these guys who build unstoppable super-decks and can't be beaten.
That's no fun.

I still have my entire card collection of a couple thousand cards.

Pegasus with his Millenium Eye this week.  Man, I wished he'd just shut up!

I played in junior high and early high school.  I tried to get into it again in college, but it just wasn't the same.

I think they did a big overhaul of the system sometime between my junior high days and later on.

Still, there was nothing like "all-nighters" where we'd play all night and watch videos, though my choice of movie would often be shouted down even then.

Hoody Hoo!
"Dineing Philospers", eh? Sounds like a possability there, Freep.
Never got into D&D, but do see the appeal of RPG's per sae. I like starit tatical games like "Star Fleet Battles"....huge rule book, but it works for me.

I was wondering if there was anyone *really* geeky enough to understand that reference

I never really understood the game, when I played it casually, it seemed like my character would do as well as my friendship with the game master was doing (which was very wild). In any case... glad you found something to have fun with.

i too got conned into the whole magic thing, i also have my cards still except i haven't played it in years. anyone want to buy them? of course you'd have to pay in shipping overseas and whatnot! :P

and yes that is annoying when people built up their decks and tried to wallop you, luckily none of us were really that good so it didn't matter too much.

never got into D and D, but after i saw the movie i kinda didn't really care :P  its the sort of movie i enjoy whilst realising how crap it was, and not even in a b movie good kind of way.

AD&D is storytelling.  The DM spins a lot of the tale, but what you end up with is a complex story made from several contributors (including the silent player, chance).

Be warned that, though I have played for around 20 years, I have only found a few people that I really enjoy gaming with (usually, I am the DM).  The biggest pitfall is Hack & Slash.  Those would be people or entire groups that see one way to solve any problem or continue any story - chop it up.

Really, for a while we had a good group with myself DMing, Todd as a sort of quiet and thoughtful thief, Gary as the neurotic priest, and Steve was the gung ho dwarf.  Steve would usually listen to Todd's character, so long as he could spin it in a way that might meet the desires of Steve's ID.  Gary, well, Gary was a cleric who had a phobia of undead.  If Gary tried to turn an undead and it didn't turn, he would run away.  The character also had a short temper for anyone without proper religious guidance.  Between Todd's style as a mediator, Steve's damage potential (though he was usually affable), and Gary's difficult personality, we quite often would stop to laugh at the story.  On the other hand, some of our adventures were just as entertaining as reading a good fantasy book.  Battles, character development, the unexpected - you name it.

Case in point:
Gary says, "I'm afraid to get close to them"
Todd replies, "Why?"
Gary, a little agitated, "'Cause they're dead."
Todd, "So?"
Gary, on the edge of a breakdown, "And they're walking around!"

I also play DnD, and its nothing like that crappy dnd movie!!

Its as Andrew said, storytelling with the DM as the man with the ideas and the players as the actors. Together they write a novel with their own touch to it!
Plus it often gives good memories from worthy moments :)

I used to play D&D when I was a teenager. I also played a few other RPGs like Top Secret and Traveller.

D&D was always fun to play EXCEPT when we ended up playing with a real nerd who knew all of the "lore" and took the enjoyment out of the game by saying stuff like:

"No . . . that's impossible . . . a ghoul would never really do that."

Or

"If he's chaotic evil, he can't do that."

Or

"He wouldn't be able to use his infra vision because . . . "

You know the type. People like that also know all of the Star Wars "lore," and enjoy talking about it loudly in public, as if anyone cares.
