For the last week my local comic book store ,New Age Comics, has had it's gates locked for some reason. I thought/hoped that the people were just on vacation or something. Today ,from my brother, he was able to find out that the Manager wasn't paying his rent and so they came out and locked up the gate even the employes didn't know what was going on. I heard the most likely thing to happen is that the business will close. This store for my whole life is where I got my comic books and also where I learned that I wanted to become a comic book artist/writer. The guy who I always see there ,Bill, has known me since the day I first came in there and bought my first comic book "Ghost Rider" back when I was seven. I never became a fan of Ghost Rider but I began buying huge amounts of Superman Comic books and I also went through a Aliens and Predator faze. Then In my first year of middle school I discoverd the great world of Japanese comic books. I bought Gundam Wing stuff, Dragon Ball Z, Dragonball,Fist of the North Star (not to metion the DVD movie) Raijin Comics and Shonen Jumpand discovered the Anime "Bio Booster Armor Guyver" . Also once in a while i'd buy card games, and also bought the new teenage mutant ninja turtle comic books there and recently the "Knights of the Dinner Table" comics. *Sigh* I can probaly get all the comics another way by ordering but it's not the same. I'll probably give Bill a call and thank him for everything. Who Knows maybe it'll open up but maybe not.
New Age Comics 1993-September 16 2003 R.I.P
-If it weren't for New Age Comics I wouldn't know what I wanted to be when I grow up :daveblackeye15, David Banes-
I don't think this topic is worthless.
I always hate to see them go. In fact I have seen so many come and go around here that whenever a new one opens I always look at the owner with sad eyes and wonder how long he will actually make it. It is always sad to see them go. That just goes to show why you should always buy as much as you can from your local independent comic book store. (the same thing applies to the local independent video rental store)
By the way, my first comic was also a Ghost Rider comic book. I got mine when I was about five or six years old, but mine was the original Ghost Rider with Johnny Blaze and that issue was entitled "Freaks"(around 1980). I was hooked from the start. I still think the last ten issues of that series were some of the best comic book stories ever written.
Well, for some happy comic news, the local down in Cedar Falls called The Core just last year opened a brand new branch store, so someone is being successful.
And Now & Then Comics, my hometown store, is making its third location jump in maybe ten years to a bigger store yet again. The good news about this is, aside from the fact that they're doing so well they need more space, is that all their back issues are $1 until they get everything moved. I'm going in tomorrow to fill some gaps in my Evil Ernie collection.

I hear ya ,Dave.
My comics store, here in Columbus,Ohio, is The Laughing Ogre. Gib and the guys know their comics, and do a good job bringing in Creators. I met Jeff Smith of "Bone" fame there. Nice guy.
"Knights of the dinner table", huh? Good choice! Hoody Hoo!
That is good news. The core used to be my favorite comic book store when I went to school at UNI.
Geez, my comic store really sucks. It is owned by (I am convinced) two mafia members. It is called Collector's World and good luck finding independent comics there. Now that Black Panther is done, I only get two (Batman and Uncanny X Men).
I remember when I lived in So Cal for a while and the only comic book store in my town, All American Comics, closed shop. That was pretty depressing and killed my interest in comics for a while. Only now is it starting to come back, since I got the first ish of The Ultimate Six and the first 2 of Batman/Superman. Thankfully, Las Vegas has a bevy of good shops to go check out, especially Alternate Reality Comics.
Ours was a little shop called Wally's Coin Shop. He was a trader of rare coins and spotrts cards but he did have a great comic selection. I was alway a fan of Spider-Man and X-men but I also loved Sin City and Shi (I have issues 2 to 12 all first run of that series). But Psyco Joe and Moo Frog & Johnny the Homicidal Maniac are at the top of my list.
Off the subject a bit there. Wally has since had a heart attack and sold off the shop. It's now a tanning salon. The closest comic store now is over 30 miles away.
This is an excellent topic. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for comic stores to make money these days . . . especially with all the competition from Ebay.
I sold my entire comic collection when I was about 16. Then, about 2 or 3 years ago, I got interested again and started buying all the old Silver Age & Bronze Age Marvel Comics that I loved when I was a kid. In a very short period of time, I spent thousands of dollars and amassed a pretty impressive collection. I bought huge runs of comics like The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil, Iron Man, etc., including at least issues #1 - #130 of each, going back as far as the early 1960s. I also bought hundreds of Captain America, Fantastic Four, Thor, Crypt of Shadows, X-Men, Tales of Suspense, and a few others.
Now, I am AGAIN selling my entire collection. It bothers me to do this for 2 reasons:
1. I really enjoy them
2. I will probably get the urge to buy them back again in about 5 years
But, I really need the money more than the comics, so I had to make this tough decision. I grew up with comics and they bring back great memories of when I was a kid.

^I had to do that with over 100 monster magazines about 5 years ago.. :bluesad:
And- yeah- I'm back to over 100 more now.
I also am working on a small collection of 1960's- early 70's Marvel comics. Got lots of old FF and Giant Man/ Hulk comics. Lotsa Sgt. Fury's.
I don't know why this is in the BAD movies topic- but it is.

I went to see what people were viewing, and some guest was looking at this! I was like- "Dam! Burgo is here!"

I think that 17 years ago there was only one subforum. :bouncegiggle:
Yeah...it changed right before of after I joined... I recall Ash was Ash the Cat...
Dammit, now I want to know if he ever found another local comic shop and if Burgo did sell and buy back his collection.
^ Burgo is here- ask him!
Thanks for resurrecting this thread. My prediction from many years ago (see my comments above) came true. I did start building a comic book collection again and now have 12 long boxes full of them. The circle of life: buying and selling the same comics over and over.
