to my recent surprise and pleasure, to welcome spring [yes spring, we have warm weather, hooray!] somebody had a genius idea of having a moonlight drive-in in the middle of the city [i live in melbourne, australia.]
now we do have one or two drive-in's around town somewhere, but this is just a temporary experience, and full of the cool excitement that comes with going to a drive-in.
i went and saw the secretary [a pretty good film that reaffirms the status of the gyllenhalls to 'wierd actors' category] and happily found there were a number of improvements to the classic drive-in of yesteryear that i know and love.
first of all we were all just in a carpark at the main marketplace in the city, not some professionally set out complex. [yes not really an improvement, but conveniant distance wise]
next, instead of those speaker units that you hook onto your window, which is what i was expecting, you now just tune in your radio to a certain station and whammo! crystal clear sound [which is good since i have a cool stereo system in my car!] i guess people kept driving off with the unit still attached.
but the really interesting thing was that at the end of the movie, the screen dissappeared! that is, it was an inflatable screen and i didn't even notice until they were packing it away. you know those jumping castles? yes, the same sort of concept.
all in all a very fun experience, and something i hadn't done in a long long time.
next on the cards is the 'moonlight cinema' which is just an outdoor movie shown at the botanical gardens, and also has a really cool atmosphere where people bring picnics and friends and sleeping bags etc. ought to be alot of fun, just wish they would show the deathstalker series there instead of comercially viable films! :-P
just wondering, do any of you have a similar thing happening in your local area? that is, a temporary drive-in set up just for the cool experience and a hell of alot of fun?
I haven't seen this around here (Boston).
There are still a few "real" drive-ins in the area (Massachusetts and New Hampshire), but I haven't been to one for a couple of years.
thats a shame, i thought it was a really good idea because it gets people back into the drive-ins and it was a pretty good atmosphere all round. that and drive-ins are always good for some corny fun.
