I think I wrote a post about this a year or two ago but I forget so here I am typing again.
Have you ever been in a theater and the film literally burns up?
You know how they show it sometimes in movies where the film burns up inside the projector and you see it melt onscreen revealing the lightbulb?
The hole starts in or around the middle and spreads outward until its gone.
It's a very rare thing but it actually happened to me when I paid to see "Black Dog".
I guess I should be grateful that I was spared from having to sit through that horrid movie! (I later rented it and thought it sucked)
It happened just like I explained before....the film literally melted!
Luckily it happened within the first 1/2 hour.
The lights came on and we were offered vouchers for free movie or we could go to any of the other screens and watch another film.
Unfortunately all of the other films were well into an hour or more so we declined.
I took the free voucher. I used it to see "The Wedding Singer" which was ok.
Have any of you had this happen to you?

I have never seen this in a theater, but I had a super 8 mm movie projector when I was a kid. Sometimes the film would get stuck and 1 or 2 frames would start to melt.
It happened occasionally in grade school. Then there was the time I saw Heavy Metal in the theater -- it was a horrible copy, and they only charged us a buck each to get in, the film didn't burn up, but it did break a couple of times.
Yea, I've seen this happen when I saw return of the jedi back in 1983... :D but they fixed it within 10 mins... :D
never saw it happen except on our old 8mm...i like the ending of Two-Lane Blacktop where the film "burns" out at the end though.
Twice. Once was so long ago I can't remember what the movie was (i was 12 and I was mad). The last time was during "What women want". I was actually THRILLED because it was at the very end of the movie...which I thought royally sucked...and because of it we got free raincheck passes for another movie. They never fixed it, I think a hole completely burned in the reel.
I used to go to a crappy theater where I was always getting up to complain to the projectionist. Either the film was totally off center, the sound was low or too loud or there was no sound at all. Once the sound was completely off from the movie by about 2 seconds. I've had to get up and complain about the lights not being lowered (or the dimmers turned off once the movie begins)
I saw this happen once in grade school. I always wondered why they didn't just design the projectors so that the light is further back from the film, maybe using lenses to focus it so that it's bright enough.
