First off, I'm going to start this post by saying that YES I am a Democrat. Yes I am a liberal.
I know that quite a few of you are Republicans and I respect that. I know that many of you hate Michael Moore and I respect that as well. I do not want this to turn into a flame battle between any particular politcal views.
That having been said, I just wanted to let the other Demos on this site know about a great oppurtunity to break into a future in film. Moveon.org is sponsoring a competition which involves filming a commercial about George W. Bush.
This commercial must be in either Mpeg or Quicktime format and cannot run over thirty seconds. The ad must show the "truth" about George Bush and will be shown the week of his State Of The Union address. The judges are: Michael Moore, Donna Brazile, Jack Black, Janeane Garofalo, Margaret Cho and Gus Van Sant. All entries must be sent to the website in the digital formats that I mentioned.
I myself will definently be entering this competition. I am a huge fan of Moore's work and am firm in my liberal beliefs. This is a fantastic idea and I can't wait to get shooting.

Once again, I do not want this to turn into any type of flame war.
You've got to be kidding
I don't like Moore [tons of evidence out there about his inability to tell the truth, and not just from conservative websites either] but I like the overall idea. I just hope they pick an ad that isn't shrill and has a sense of humor.
What's really sad is that something like this COULD be funny ... but none of the judges mentioned have ANY credibility for ANYTHING serious. This will likely not be about humor, but will probably be caustic and, well, ugly. It will be interesting to see the winning entry, and what some of the non-winners were like.
BTW, I am NOT a liberal, but I am not afraid of a joke, either; IF it's funny.
Skaboi - That was a very tactful and intellectually tolerant post you wrote. I hope you, or someone of comparable character wins the contest.
"This will likely not be about humor, but will probably be caustic and, well, ugly."
Just a follow up on this old thread, the winning entry shows images of George Bush and Adolf Hitler as if some kind of comparison exists. You couldn't have been more right, Ulthar. I guess it says a lot about the organization that their contest was to make a negative ad about Bush rather than a positive ad about whatever it is they stand for.
Sorry mate, this is just way too unfair, I didnt see as many folks doing this to clinton when he was in office and Clinton helped f**k us all over. sure there were all the sex scandal jokes, but come on. This is just a waste of time/money.
why not be fair and point the finger at the entire US government.and I mean the middle finger of course.
Wow...sounds like more evidence for my theory that Moore is actually a double agent for the Republicans. Too bad, this could have been funny and thought provoking.
"This is just a waste of time/money."
You can say that again. The organization doesn't even have the balls to run the ad on television like they said they would. If there's anything worse than a pack of wacko political extremists, it's a pack of spineless wacko political extremists.
And you're right, as silly and unfair as the revilement of Clinton was, it didn't hold a candle to this.
Yeah, I also have to agree that it didn't turn out the way I hoped it would. I was also hoping for a intelligent and funny commercial to win the contest, but they did choose the most caustic entry.
I also think that they realized what the public's reaction will probably be when the commercial is released. This probably caused them to pull the commercial from TV.
As for Dunners' comments, I agree with most of them. Although I am a democrat, I can still see the flaws in the party's overall views. There is no perfect political party; especially not republican or democrat.
I am going to say that I do not like George Bush. I do feel that he is a puppet put into office to further other people's goals. I do believe that he won the presidency unfairly, but on the other hand I'll also say that I did not want Gore to win. Neither were quite intelligent. Hell, we must not forget that Gore "Invented The Internet".
So yes I am disappointed as to how the contest turned out. I am also disappointed that the group whimped out and pulled the commercial.
Yeah, I'm with Dunners. Lets just point the finger at the entire government.
I heard about this on public radio and they did make the point that most of them were very negative and some down right mean spirited. I consider myself an independent, I don't like something about both parties. I am conservative on the fiscal side and probably close to liberal on the social side.
I want them to spend my tax dollars wisely and keep their nose out of my personal affairs. I think it's time for a reasonable third party candidate. All the candidates now are owing to someone and have an agenda that is not necessarily the good of the people. I would like to have a presidential election where there is someone you can choose for the good they will do instead of having to vote for whoever you think will do the least harm.
I'm cynic when it comes to politics, but I keep voting and hoping for change.
To anyone thinking of making an ad of their own - use the Tenacious D song "f**k Her Gently" as the theme music and the add to the effect that Bush has been f**king us but in subtle enough ways in some cases that most of the people who think he isn't the worst goddamn president we've ever had don't notice. It'll definitely get Jack Black's vote.
Sadly, I know f**k all about flash or Mpeg videos and can only suggest things.
I'd love to make one of these things if I could.

Trek_Geezer-My man, truer words have never been spoken!
Brother R-You should snag a copy of Flash....errr...I mean buy a copy. It's actually pretty easy to use.
"I do believe that he won the presidency unfairly, but on the other hand I'll also say that I did not want Gore to win. Neither were quite intelligent. Hell, we must not forget that Gore "Invented The Internet". "
In fairness to both:
1) Al Gore headed a committee that made a lot of good policy concerning government use of the internet (and related technology) as well as establishing (and limiting) government regulation and monitoring of it. I think he was referring to that work and I'm not sure he actually claimed to have "invented" it (or if he did, I think he was trying to be funny, never his strong suit).
2) Every media and academic recount shows Bush won FL. Every one. Even the ones where the ballot criteria strongly favored Gore. Every last recount. And for every "irregularity" that seemed to hurt Gore, there were ones that hurt Bush - especially the media calling FL before the ballots in the western half of the state (Bush country) were closed.
I agree that both parties are screwed up, but I also think that the men who seek office on both sides are constantly, and more often than not unfairly, coming under the kind of fire that scares the best candidates away from the process altogether.

I agree with that. I had a friend years ago who was fond saying we should not give the job (or President) to anyone who wants it. There are people in the private sector (or heck, even some government jobs) who have tremendous leadership skills, but no political aspirations.
My biggest problem with the system right now is that truth, honor, integrity, character and leadership DON'T seem to matter. Everybody on each side of the aisle seems perfectly happy to just accept that the other side is lying, stretching facts, etc. to make their point.
