Title: Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban Teaser Trailer
Post by: Ash on November 21, 2003, 04:19:06 AM
If you're a Harry Potter junkie like me who's read some or all of the books, you'll want to check out the new teaser trailer.

I have read every book and did find this 3rd installment to be by far the weakest entry in the series.  It introduces Sirius Black (pronounced "serious") played by Gary Oldman.  While I do admire Oldman as an actor, he is definitely NOT my first choice to play Black.  When I read the book I had envisioned a very different person than him.
And as for the new guy playing Dumbledore....well I'm not too sure about him.  I still say Nick Nolte in full wizard garb and raspy voice would be 100 times better.

Check out the teaser and tell us what you think.  (click where it says "trailers & clips")

Nobody ever likes the actors they pick in comparison to the books..hence why books are better since it requires more of your imagination.

Gary Oldman on the other hand is a fantastic character actor, he's the kind of guy you hardly recognize from film to film. I feel stupid that it wasn't until recently that I realized he was british..heh

Are you saying that the third book is the weakest, or that the movie is the weakest?  If the latter, I think that's jumping the gun to a ridiculous level.

I can go out on a limb and say Micheal Gambon (Dumbledore) is a great character actor.  I doubt he'll be able to stand up to Richard Harris(how could he?), but he is a fine, fine actor.

I still haven't seen the second entry, so hey.

Haven't read any of the Harry Potter books, but my wife has read nearly all of them so far. She's in the middle of Goblet of Fire. Anyway, I asked her what she thought of Gary Oldman as Sirius, and she seems to think he's a perfect choice. I'll have to take her word for it.

We're both trying to figure out who this guy playing Dumbledore is. He's obviously no Richard Harris, but he looks like he's capable enough. He seems to have a pretty lengthy resume, but most of them are not movies I'd go out of my way to see (I did see Gosford Park, but slept through most of it). I really can't say I've heard of him or recall any of the characters he's played.

I have never read a Harry Potter book or seen a Harry Potter movie.  But I have seen XANADU several times.  There is something SERIOUSLY wrong with me.

And while we're on the subject, what do you think Michael Beck's finest movie was?  XANADU?  THE WARRIORS?  WARLORDS OF THE 21ST CENTURY?

I'll be interested to see how they portray the dementors....but I agree, the third book was the weakest.   Looking back, I don't think the series really hits its stride till the fourth book...the first is good to introduce the characters but the second and third books are too similar...the second book especially just seems like a repeat of the first.

I enjoy the films, but so far they've had the feeling more of a series of formula films with the same characters, sort of like the James Bond series than they do a connected story.  I'll be interested in the fourth and fifth films, since the characters are a lot better developed.

Wait until they get to the fourth or fifth movie and they have to re-cast the kids. If they stick with the same actors, Harry will be 16 by the time of the fourth movie.

>Whats worse? I'm 29 and I admit..I have the CD in my car

When the film came out I used to hear Magic all the time, then I finally saw the movie on cable and was disappointed to find out that they only included about 30 seconds of it.

I don't read the books, does each book progress to the next year of their age? movies can indulge a little..I think using the same kid aged might more leway to make it a little darker and mature each time. I mean I liked the sequel far better than the original simply because of that. But if it's not doable then I think when they begin recasting the kids it's gonna get really really lame. They shouldn't keep trying to appeal to the same age group, but realize these kids are growing up too and probably don't want the same kind of film they saw when they were 8 by the time they are 13

Yes, each book progresses 1 year ahead from the last and the 3rd one is the darkest.

Book 4, The Goblet of Fire, is in my opinion the best of the five so far.  It does lighten up from the 3rd book but does include a serious confrontation with Voldemort (Harry duels with him) and the first death of a character.  Harry literally carries the dead person back to Dumbledore & co. so it does get dark towards the end.

I think it would be the biggest mistake ever to change actors as the series moves along.
For example, it would be like replacing Stallone with some no name guy as Rambo.  It wouldn't work.

Not having read the books I don't know if it's a likelyhood. But in most cases if they want to keep the character round-a-bouts the same age they have to..it takes awhile to film a movie and with the inbetween breaks, kids grow up. With just two more films on the horizon I think it's possible they could pull it off..I mean the lead actor is only 14 now so he'll still be under 18  Can you believe the order of the phoenix will be out in 2007? Seems so far away.

Then again I used to think the reality of living in the 2000 was like a futuristic sci-fi movie...or prince song. Something far off and distant.

Really doubt they'll change the kid actors...though I sure wouldn't mind if they got rid of the girl who plays Hermione.  She's probably the biggest case of the book being changed for Hollywood.  She looks nothing like the character's description in the book.

Kids grow really fast at that age so I wouldn't be surprised if the kids grow into their characters by the time they film the fifth book.   I heard someplace how they had to shoot entire seasons of Malcolm in the Middle back to back without a break because the kids just grow too quickly--had they shot  in the conventional timeframe the kids would have grown way too much from one season to the next.

I think Gary Oldman will be awesome as Serius Black.  As for the new Dumbledore, the actor playing him is good, but it will be hard to see someone new in there.  I'm also looking forward to seeing what direction the new director takes it in.  Someone mentioned that the first two movies seemed a lot alike but, with a new director, that should change.

As far as changing actors, that would be a huge mistake- look how wierd it will be with a new Dumbledore!  Changing one of the main (beardless) actors would throw everything off.  Besides, people in their 20's & 30's have been known to play high schoolers before... 21 Jump Street, Beverly Hills 90210.

I read in the newspaper that Harry Potter said he is "recording Goblet of Fire but after that who knows?" I really don't think Harry Potter 5 is ever coming out.

does anyone know if Goblet of Fire is going to have that "harris" wannabe??? I thought the 3rd movie was horrible. I really hope they do all the series, but they better hurry up, potter's growing fast!
