Title: Over the Edge
Post by: Darkautumn on November 24, 2003, 04:14:45 PM
ANyone out there a fan of "Over the Edge," the quintessesntial 70s "delinquent" movie? Just watched it again recently, and it's still great stuff. It started me thinking that this would be one of the titles I'd love to see get a nice DVD release, but I think it's a Warner Brothers property, so it's likely to be a awhile.

Loved this one when I was a kid...of course my parents hated it.   Back then I identified with the kids, but I rewatched it recently and was amazed at the about-face in my attitude...now I hate the kids!

was a favorite of the late Kurt Cobain.  Also Matt Dillon's first movie I think.  A classic

I wonder if they're having trouble releasing it because of the music rights.  That seems to happen a lot to movies with a lot of different songs featured on the soundtrack.

I used to have the soundtrack on vinyl, too.  Would LOVE  find it again on CD or tape.  Ramones, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, and even stuff like Little Feat and Minnie Ripperton!

Can anyone explain why movie studios don't put home video rights into the contract when they buy the rights to use a particular piece of music? I mean how many movies are there where the video version had to use different music because the studio no longer had the rights? Supposedly, that's the reason the recent DVD of Return of the Living Dead II has an all new soundtrack. Of course the studio couldn't resist making some other small changes to it also and they supposedly included the original soundtrack with the French language version on the same disc.

Since home video was a new thing in the late 70s-early 80s it was probably just a lack of foresight. Home video turned out to be a whole new market, and now an even bigger source of revenue than the original theatrical release can be. Plus it's probably cheaper to license the music for a limited time rather than pay for the rights to use the music in all future versions or re-releases.

IANA Lawyer but maybe foreign release music rights are negociated under different terms, or are harder to enforce. I remember hating my VHS copy of "Slapshot" (besides that the picture was so lousy since the white bled over and obscured the features of the ice rink and made the players in the distance in any shot look like just legs and free floating heads) since they replaced all the soundtrack songs with lame "soundalikes" all performed by the same band. Closer examination of the box revealed the words "home video version" in small print on the back. The DVD restores the original music, guess the fans expressed annoyance.

I hate that if "WKRP in Cincinnati" is ever released on DVD, they will probably have to use the generic music that has been used on the syndicated version for years. Licensing that much music for episodes of a show that ran for multiple years would be expensive, even though it was an important part of the show.

"Over the Edge" - it probably explains how square I am that when I first saw it on TV as a teen, I hated the kids and thought they were overindulged. Plus since the book "Lord of the Flies" was still fresh in my mind at the time, I figured they'd turn on the misfits and weaker ones in their group at some point if it happened in real life. And I'd probably be one of the ones on the receiving end. I like the movie though, just couldn't relate.

Back in the early 90s, Entertainment Weekly used to mention "Over the Edge" so often in lists of neglected films and in articles about films affecting the culture, that I was convinced someone on the editorial staff was on a personal crusade to  turn the movie into an "important classic film" or lodge the film into a more prominent postion in popular culture.

I loved this movie as a kid.  Michael Kramer and Matt Dillion added to my enjoyment.  I would also like to see it on DVD if anyone from Warner Bros. is reading this. Thanks.

Wow, this is a blast from the past.  I remember seeing it on tv, the scene where the kid points a gun at the cop is one that has stuck in my mind.

LOL...... Over The Edge is one of my all time favorite movies LOL. Granted, it's bad if you compare it to movies from today, but none the less, it's still my fav.
