Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I would like a few opinions on this movie. I own the DVD and think this is a really cool film. I personally describe it to people as a French revoution, kung-fu, monster, romance, political thriller.
I read a rumor once that the director was planning a prequel where the adventurous royal taxidermist and his Native American companion are pursuing ghosts in England. Anyone else heard anything of this?
This is in my top ten most favorite films. This film defies catagorsation. Is it a action movie?Horror movie?Love story? Fantasy?, its probably a combination of the four, which gives it a very unique look and style.
The action in this movie was awsome, I think in some ways it rivals the Matrix fight scenes because Brotherhoods fight are very real and brutal, the Matrix fight scenes, while very cool, were more unrealistic.
I love the story, finding it very intriguing and suspensefull.During the course of the movie the story evolves a great deal.In the begining its seems like its going to be just anouther monster movie, but by the end it has become almost a political thriller.
The charectors are cool as hell.Mani and the Royal Taxedermist (sorry I can't remeber his name and don't feel like watching the movie to find it out) are some of the absolute coolest charectors in a movie.Mani is a badass fighter, but also has a very mystical aura to him.The Taxedermist has a cool wit and charm, but by the end of the movie you see that he is also a very formidible fighter. The women in this movie are strong and hot as hell, the spy is absolutely beatiful thank god she gets naked alot in the movie.
I should stop before giving the whole movie away. This movie is a great one and should not be missed by anyone.
This did get it 's idea (the beast) from a real incident. If you have the DVD there is an extended version of the beginning fight sequence which totally gives away Grégoire de Fronsac's (Samuel LeBihan ) kick ass capabilities. The director explains and I agree that it would have ruined the last third of the movie. Mani (played by Marc Dacascos) really does a lot by saying little. The fights were all staged by David Wu
I have read reviews that say the plot is incomprehensible, but they have missed the point. The plot becomes something that you don't realize in the beginning because it does appear to be a monster flick.
The beautiful prostitute is played by Monica Belucci and she is hot. There are some extracted scenes in the brothel among the extras on the DVD.
The narration with the old count is quite poignant . He appears to be writing his memoir and is then escorted out of the house and I am assuming to the guillotine.
I had been reading about this movie for a year before it came to the states. When it did get here it was a very limited release. Luckily the DVD came out shortly after it left theaters. I also count it among my favorites.
This happens to be one of my favorite films. My husband didn't care for it. But then he hates Alien,Aliens and Alien3..and those are my all-time favorites.
I loved the atmosphere of Brotherhood of the Wolf.
I liked this movie too, but I was disappointed by the ending.
SPOILER BELOW
It should have had either a supernatural ending or a very realistic explanation of the beast... As it turns out, the ending wasn't supernatural but it also wasn't believable that an animal would act that way or would even function under the conditions it was in.
I cannot get enough of Monica Belucci either. If you've got a strong constitution and can gut out the first half of the movie, she is in every scene in the second half of "Irreversible." The first half of the movie is almost unwatchably violent, however, so consider yourself warned.
I'd have to say that, in the category of 18th Century political conspiracy monster kung-fu flicks, this is the tops! I shall endeavour to poke around a bit re. the pre-quel
What can I say, it is one of my favorite films.
Emotionally Arousing
The attack on the woman trying to rescue the lamb, scared me.
Emphatic Characters
Both in the younger (Jeremie Renier) and the older (Jacques Perrin) d'Apcher.
Great Action
When de Fronsac ( Samuel Le Bihan), Mani (Mark Dacascos) and d'Apcher hunt for the beast.
Realistic
A fairly accurately portrayal of what life was like in 18th century France.
I also like the scene, where they are testing their wapons. De Fronsac fires his pistol and shatters the pumpkin, Mani throws his tomahawk and shatters the pumpkin, and d'Apcher fires his crossbow, and the bolt shatters the pumpkin, shatters the stone flower pot behind the pumpkin, and the last any body saw that baby, it was still traveling.
And watch the way Mani brushed back his coat to get to his tomawhawk. That is one character you do not want to mess with.
BROTHERHOOOD OF THE WOLF is not a bad film. It had the feel of DOG SOLDIERS, 28 DAYS LATER, and DAGON (maybe not this one). I don't mean story wise, just visual style. Something to sharp, piercing, jagged about the film style. Unsettling or unerving and not in a scary way.
