Title: Recent Purchases (Read'em and weep !)
Post by: Scott on December 08, 2003, 08:58:26 PM
Well, the stores have out all of their DVD specials and here is what I found over the weekend:

CAPTAIN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER - For $5.88 at Walmart. Beat that price Burgomaster ! (I seen you mention this a few times) Widescreen with extras. Paramount DVD.  Should be good.

EXTRA WEIRD SAMPLER - For $4.99 at Borders. Over 100 films. Each title has about a 5 - 10 minute sample. They might even be trailers (not sure). Watched only 3 of them so far and this is just a fantastic DVD. Love it.

MANOS: HANDS OF FATE - Borders has a giant display of Alpha DVD's out this season. All great stuff. Bought this one for $6.99. Seen THE SADIST with Archie Hall Jr. there also for the same price. I'll try to pick it up before it;'s gone.

THE DEVILS NIGHTMARE/MESSIAH OF EVIL - This double movie DVD distributed by Diamond Entertainment. Bought it for $5.99 at Suncoast. I've seen it on the shelve for almost a year at $9.99, but they finally brought down the price. THE DEVILS NIGHTMARE is a Euro/Horror that is known by about 10 other titles.
THE MESSIAH OF EVIL (a.k.a. Dead People) shows some promise.

It might take me awhile to see all of these films, but I'm working on it.  Hope you all find something cool this month.

You have me beat by 10 cents.  I bought CAPTAIN KRONOS from Deep Discount DVD for $5.98.  But you got a great deal because Deep Discount has recently raised the price on this one and they now sell it for $13.56.

I do not own MANOS, but Deep Discount is selling it for $5.99.

I bought the Redemption DVD version of THE DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE a few years ago.  I probably paid around $15.00 for it.

Interesting note:  I also bought FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL and BLACK SUNDAY (the one with Bruce Dern and Robert Shaw) from Deep Discount DVD around the same time that I bought CAPTAIN KRONOS.  I paid $5.98 for each of them, which was a great deal because I saw them in Circuit City for $14.95.  Deep Discount has recently raised the prices on all 3 of these movies to $13.56.

I guess timing is everything.

I'm a window shopper till I find a good price. Deepdiscount doesn't care some titles, for instance "The Tingler". Amazon has it for about $17+ but I found that at a local Frye's electronicns store here it's going for $9...along with ALOT of other b-movies which are normally found for more elsewhere. I wonder why that is, do they overstock on these movies and have trouble selling them which is why they drop the price?

I just watched about half of the EXTRA WEIRD SAMPLER. Phew I think I'm all weirded out for a little while. The clips from NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES, COLOR ME BLOOD RED, GORE GORE GIRLS, etc. were to much. Not to mention WAM BAM THANK YOU SPACEMAN. They are previews and trailers. Totally insane.

I was tempted by MONSTER FROM HELL it was also on the shelve. How did you like THE DEVILS NIGHTMARE?

MONSTER FROM HELL is really terrible, so don't buy it unless you get a good price . . . it's probably the worst of the Hammer/Cushing/Frankenstein movies.

DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE is one of the better Euro/sex/horror movies from the 1970s.  The version I have has the uncut lesbian scenes, which is never a bad thing.

NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES, COLOR ME BLOOD RED, GORE GORE GIRLS . . . I have them all and they have given me hours of viewing pleasure!

I have the extra weird sampler (2 of them.)  I got them when borders gave them for free when you purchased a SWV release (before they got pulled for awhile.) It's indeed all trailers- a little too much trashy porn for my taste though.  There's some great SWV movies and then there's the flat out crap.

The Alpha Manos DVD is worth any price!  So great to finally have this movie un-MST'd!  (and that's speaking as an avid MST fan).

And yes, it's just as bad as ever.

The Alpha copy of the The Sadist is fine, though I have no other to compare it to.  Also a surprisingly good little movie.

Note -- When you order 5 or more DVDs direct from Alpha, they're only 5 apiece plus shipping.

I looked at alpha's website (they also release stuff as collectable records.)  They had a lot of garage rock and different things that are interesting for very low prices.  I was thinking about ordering some stuff from them.  Did you guys register with them, or order by phone?  How were they?

I finally got around to wtching this movie.

It's a vampire movie with a few interesting twists.  The DVD has a sharp video transfer.  A bargain at under $6.00.
