Title: OT - Artery Clogging Treats
Post by: AndyC on January 05, 2004, 03:07:08 PM
The breakfast thread made me think of this.

What are your favourite unhealthy treats, to accompany an evening of cheesy movies or simply satisfy a craving. Burgers, dogs, pizzas and cold cuts are all great, but I'm talking about foods on a par with Elvis' fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

I would have to put poutine at the top of my list. I don't know if it's caught on in the States, but this French-Canadian concoction has pretty much spread across Canada in the last ten years or so. It's been described as a heart attack on a plate. Take a large serving of fries, cover them with cheese curds and smother the whole thing with gravy. There are different variations, including one with bacon, which is my favourite. You can almost feel the pain shooting down your left arm as you eat it. Delicious.

Ahhh... you truly know the way to my heart. I prefer to cuddle up with my girlfriend and enjoy cheezy movies, after pounding a couple chili dogs and wash it all down with some root beer. ; )
Title: The Hamdog

Now here's an artery clogging treat that I'd love to try!

It's called "The Hamdog".

(It's on CunsumptionJunction.com which may have objectionable material on the page so if you're at work, you might want to wait till you get home to read it)

Here it is:

Would you eat one?

That is the most amazing food item I have seen in a long time. Looks really hard to eat though.

Our stores are selling things that aren't even food products. We buy them and eat'em. What value do most of it have for us? I might take food out of my diet all together. I figure in a few weeks I won't need to eat anymore. Next I would work on the water and oxygen dependence. Well, maybe not. : )

I once had some "chilli cheese fries" from a JACK IN THE BOX restruant in L.A. Wow did I ever like that one.

Up in Lake Placid  I had something called a "log jam". It's a whole fried stuffed potato with the works on it and in it. Wow....................

About 10 years ago I ate only Raisin Brain and such for about a year. That's not good for you as I had a zero cholesterol level. I still eat my Raisin Brain with much more than those days.

Gotta be the 7-11 nachos with the "chili topping" that my buddy Bruce and I lived on when I first moved out of the folks house.  These were not a natural food item, I don't even think that the cheese was a real dairy concoction.  I think this was the main contributor to Bruce's death at the age of 43.

I especially like when the words "food product" are actually a part of the name. It's pretty much a guarantee that the contents are anything but what they claim to be.

My favorite artery clogging meal is veal parmigiana.  Nothing like a healthy dose of cheese and breaded, fried veal to clog the old arteries.

As for other meals and snacks:

* Pizza, with pepperonis, black olives, and extra cheese

* Chinese food

* A roast beef sandwich, on an onion roll, with barbecue sauce and cheese, accompanied by a mound of french fries

* An Italian sub (or hoagy or grinder, depending upon where you live), with plenty of olive oil and hot peppers, accompanied by some greasy, salty potato chips

* Cheese and crackers

* Popcorn with lots of butter (or that fake stuff they refer to as "topping" in the movie theaters)

* Hot dogs & cheeseburgers, fresh off the grill

* Chili cheese fries

* Kentucky Fried Chicken, with mashed potatoes and gravy (an instant heart attack waiting to happen)

* A corned beef or pastrami sandwich, with cheese and plenty of mustard

* Cheese enchiladas

* Fried cheese sticks

>>Fried cheese sticks<<

Oh man i used to make those all the time. Tho not an artery clogger, i used to find ways to make my healthy food unhealthy. One was making a sub sandwhich and stuffing it with lays potato chips. Chips inside a sandwhich is highly enjoyable. I also like making homemade burrito's and frying them. I also make homemade quesadillas, buttering both of the tortillas so they fry good and filling them with cheese, chicken, hot sauce, etc etc

I also enjoy dipping mcdonalds french fries into their hot fudge sundeas. Most cringe at this idea but nothing is better than sweet and salty. Some i've heard dip them into milkshakes but i find nothing more pleasurable than getting that bit of hot fudge from the sundae. Of course now i'm stepping into the territory of my odd eating habits...

But perhaps the most unhealthy thing I eat is Long John Silvers (notorious for their high fat content) It's not the chicken, fries and hushpuppies that's as bad as the fact that I always order a side of crumbs. Yes ladies and gentlemen, I enjoy crunching on the leftover fried batter crumbs which they generously put in a box free of charge!

I saw in a vending machine the other day at work.  In big letters it said "Pork Chop"...and in little letter is said "shaped patty"

My grandmother used to make the ever popular "Bit Bar".

One layer of graham cracker, one layer of butterscotch chips, one layer of coconut, one layer of chocolate chips, another layer of coconut and the whole thing gets condensed milk poured over the top.

You can feel the arteries hardening while chewing this wonderful little dessert.

Oh yea I also like Eggplant Parmegian from anywhere and those Southwest Eggrolls from Chilli's Restaurant.

Johnny Rockets (50's style hamburger places)
Mels Drive In (I think there are only two, Featured in the film American Graffiti)
In and Out (they serve only hamburgers and fries and look like McDonalds)
Out Back Steak House

Here are the place that I have been to:

Pizza Hut
Taco Bell
Quizno's
Krispy Kreme
McDonalds
Burger King
Dairy Queen
Jack in the Box
Carl Jrs
Wendy's
Arby's
Roy Rogers
Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips
Friendly's
Ponderosa
Sizzlers
Domino's
Pudgies Pizza
Planet Hollywood
Hard Rock Cafe
Ruby Tuesdays
Chilli's
Red Lobster
Boston Chicken
T.G.I.F
Kentucky Fried Chicken
Popeyes Chicken
Applebees
Olive Garden
Damons
Dunkin Donuts
White Castle
Blimpies
Chick A' Fil
Carrolls
Red Barn
Wawa (good convienent store here in NJ)

Buffets:

Seaview Mariott Brunch
Showboat Casino Madi Grau Buffet
Sharon Zengs Buffet (Chinese)
Lake Luzerne Texas Barbeque near Lake George NY (the greatest)
Some giant buffet in Lancaster, Pa that I can't recall at this time.

Some great places in San Francisco and Monterey that I don't remember the name of. Lobsters in Maine

Diners are also great !

Being from an old Norwegian family, how's this for pure calories?  It's called rumegraut (I'm positive I spelled it wrong, but that's the phoenetic version, anyway), and the ingredients are:  flour, sugar, butter, milk, and heavy cream.  Sprinkle a little cinnamon and sugar on top, and it absolutely rules, but it's kinda like solidified egg nog, it's too rich to eat very much at one time.

Alas, I can't enjoy the artery clogging treats as much as I used to [got my blood tested back in the fall and the triglycerides were above 600 so I had to change my diet and start taking medication--at the ripe old age of 31] but I used to enjoy chili sausage cheeseburgers at a local greasy spoon.  It was basically a sausage cheeseburger with a giant patty, and with chili and cheese poured all over it.  Took up a giant plate.

Of course, now I've moved and this place doesn't have very many good restaurants, so that makes it a tad easier to not go overboard.  Plus, I'm broke.
We're moving again next month and will probably have better restaurants to choose from, so I'll have to start watching it again.

a bag of corn chips and soft cream cheese to use as a dip. Quick, simple, fairly inexpensive and will give you a heart attack.

I forgot HARDEES. Is this franchise still around anywhere?

Title: Re: OT - Artery Clogging Treats
Post by: Cricket21a on January 12, 2004, 01:35:12 AM
It's still around.  Now they have what they call thickburgers, you can get a 1/3 pound, 1/2 pound, and I wouldn't doubt a full pound burger.

Hardees got replaced by Carl's Jr. in several states during the mid-90s.  It was weird, in my home state they got replaced by Carl's Jr. but in a neighboring state they are still Hardees.

Mmmm, the talk of restaurants is bringing back memories of dinners past.

There is a small chain in our area called Moose Winooski's that used to have something called the Lumberjack Platter. Choose three meats and a couple of sides from the available choices. My favourite was schnitzel, grilled sausage and barbecued ribs, with baked beans and garlic mashed potatoes with gravy. Oh, and it came with a little loaf of garlic bread that was literally sitting in a pool of melted butter.

There was also a local restaurant that offered a Brontosaurus Burger, which was a one-pound patty on a huge bun, with bacon, whole fried mushrooms and a bunch of other stuff, served with a basket of fries and a tray of condiments to apply as you like.

I was also really amazed at the food when Lori and I visited Chicago two years ago. A bunch of chains we don't have at home, and some interesting local establishments, all serving huge portions. I will never forget TGI Friday's Angus meatloaf stack, with bread, huge slabs of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy and French fried onion rings. A rare situation where the food turned out to be bigger than it looked in the picture. That and Superdog were the most memorable meals we had.

Thanks for that tidbit Cricket21a. I always wondered what happened to the HARDEES franchise. Finally had the chance last year in Arizona to try CARL JRS which I also enjoyed. See it in California a year before, but timing was off for a stop at CARL JRS and went to JACK IN THE BOX instead.

I have to add two places to my "to try" list.

Sonic
Checkers

Sonic is excellent.  But of course, I'm almost never able to go there now.  I was glad to see that they do have a Sonic here where I live but they're still a lot rarer than in Oklahoma or Texas--when I lived in Tulsa there was a Sonic practically on every block.

We're about to move anyway, though, so I have a feeling I will never get to experience the California Sonic experience.

Checkers is really good, I tried one of their Chili Dogs when I was down in Florida, They are pretty messy but that's more than likely why they are so good :)
