Title: OT: what's up with this?
Post by: Neon Noodle on January 09, 2004, 03:38:03 PM
I got a call from my wife this morning at about 6:15a.

Some major (SEVERAL explicatives deleted) rear ended her car and drove off without a word. No "Sorry, are you all right?", No "Damn, that was my fault, are you okay?"

Just plain old cowardice. My baby girl was in the car and thank God, both of them were unhurt.

My question is this. What the Hell kind of a world do we live in where people won't even help someone anymore? I can't honestly think of a situation where this kind of behavior is acceptable. I am a bundle of emotions right now. p**sed at the person who did this, scared that my wife/daughter could have been hurt and/or killed, and someone just left them there.

Sorry folks, just venting.

Do you have the (*^*(&^896@@#'s license plate number.  Even without, report it to the police, they may be able to get paint scrapings or some such, to match to the crook's car (and leaving the scene of an accident is a crime).

unfortunately, no license, but  I got pictures of the back of the car and the insurance company should be in touch soon. The paint scrapings idea sounds good

You said some major *&%#@.

An officer ranking above a captain and below a colonel hit them?

Or were you calling that person a "major" a***ole?

Title: Road Rage
Post by: wickednick on January 09, 2004, 05:13:27 PM
This reminds me of a funny story.I was driving to work when a guy runs a red light and clips my rear bumper. My car spun to the side and my bumper was hanging half off, but my car was still running so I did what any anger driven individual like my self would do, I steped on the gas and chased that f**ker.
It was quite a site.I was on his ass for about 15 miles before I forced him over in a ditch.I got out of my car, ran over to his, tried to open the door, but he locked it.I told him to get out of the car and he told me to f**k off.
The road we were on was a rural road so there were not many cars on it.I ran back to my car got in and turned it so that I was facing him.I reved the engine a few times and then drove straight at him. I stoped my car about a foot away from ramming into his car door. The guy in the car then bolted out the other side of his car and ran into the woods.I chased after him and quickly was able to tackle the skinny little s**t.I threw a few punches into his face and sides and dragged him kicking and screaming back to his car were I forced him to let me use his cell phone to call the police.
The police officers that came to the scene were rather ammused with how I handled the situation, but because I had used my car to threaten a person and had beaten the guy up, I got fined for Threat with a deadly weapon and Assualt. My fine totaled about 1200 dollars, but the other guy had to pay close to 3,000 for damages to my car and leaving the scene of a accident and running a red light.

This story was actually very therapeutic for me, in a wierd kind of way

Thanks wyckednick! I need to remember never to even entertain the nucleus of the idea of making you angry...

I had a situation once where I wish I could have done something like this.

This happened about 20 years ago. My wife, my  then 3 month old son, and I were vistiing our parents out of state in our brand new Subaru wagon. We had just passed through a very small rural town (a railroad crossing and a store) when we see a car coming at us in our lane. I immediately hit the gravel shoulder and this joker comes onto the shoulder headed straight for us, so  I  go further to the right onto a grassy  downward slope and this ass just barely misses us.

I notice a guy on a Harley behind us. Well he stops and looks our way and then turns and goes after the apparently drunk driver . There we are and I'm cursing, my wife is shaking, and the baby is awake and screaming.  I ended up walking over  to the closest  house  (no cell phones in 1983) and called the local cop  (yes, that's singular) and describe the car. He says,  he knows who it is and will look for him.

We get back on the road and the cop stops us on the highway  to see if we are okay and I have to tell him the whole story again and he goes to see if he can find the guy.

I have  always hoped that the Harley guy  chased this drunken a***ole down and beat the s**t out of him.

I hope everyone is okay Neon. This kind of stuff can really make you crazy, especially when you little ones are involved.

Your story  wyckednick whilst quite amusing is also quite disturbing!  But yes, I feel your pain, I hate it when people are dodgy like that.

It is certainly a sad world where noone helps someone in need, I especially hate it when you know something bad is going on, but everyone is just watching, not doing anything [I, and I'm sure plenty of others, have done this]

But it's not all that bad, i remember a few years back, the family and I were on a road trip into the country one day when we came across an old couple whose van and trailer had got bogged in some mud whilst.   They were just standing around trying to get people to help.  Since me and my brother are big strong guys [yeah right] our family stopped to help out, of course we couldn't really do much to that damn heavy trailer but we all gave it a shot.  As we kept giving it a try, people kept stopping to help out.  It sorta became a big event where people kept stopping to help and by the end about 20 people were standing around trying to help this old couple get their car free [families included]  I thought it was pretty nice of everyone stopping to help out, even when we had a heap of people.  People quite often can be nice and helpful, I guess it just helps if someone else makes the first move.

There are some who stand out in moments like that. I was in a car accident and after it was over I noticed every single person in a car around me stayed in their car..guess they didn't want to get invovled but i was injured and that memory of them just staring burns in my head. I give huge credit to the nearby storeowners who raced out across a busy public street to pry my door open and help me. The worst part is the teenagers who slammed into my drivers side door at 40mph running a red light came up to me. Vividly I remember before my ambulance arrived him nonchalontly saying .."My car is totalled but don't worry, it's ok because my dad was fixing to buy me a new one anyways". Then he walked off, kinda thinking the whole thing was cool

and I care about your car because......?  Now that kid is no doubt an adult, I wonder if he ever looks back on that and thinks maybe he said the wrong thing.  After that I vowed if I ever saw an accident again I wouldn't be one of "those" people who just stared and drove on thinking "wow, what a mess" but would get out and help. And I did, years later I caught the tail end of an intersection accident where a woman apparently not weraing a seatbelt smashed into the dash window..blood was everywhere and she was unconcious. A woman was on her cell phone (bystander) so the 911 was taken care of, but I stepped out to intervene when I saw her shake the woman. The woman, unconcious, flopped over to the left with her neck moving. Any idiot knows if you see someone in an accident you never move them because if they have a neck or spinal injury you can do more harm than good. I let her have it because it looked like she was going to keep at it. Another guy got out to direct traffic.

I saw an interesting study on tv that had someone pretending to be in need of medical help. In most cases nobody stopped to help, however all it took was one person and people followed, it's like a programmed instinct in humans not to get involved in potentially dangerous situations but if they see their peers doint it it sorta gives them permission. (same can apply with group riot situations where otherwise normal people who would never participate do so because everyone else is)

Welcome to the new world, which I think sucks! No one is polite anymore, kids and for that matter adults don't say excuse me or thank you. The idiot probably didn't have insurance or a license. Sorry about that happening to your family, glad they weren't seriously hurt.

No accident helper stories to tell, but many years ago I had gone with my grandparents to upstate New York for the summer, and my grandfather took his speed boat to use on the lake. One day while we were out there just riding around, a group of people in a boat in the center of the lake signalled for help. Their engine had died or they ran out of gas (I'm not sure which), so we ended up towing them back to their dock.
