This has come up on another board I frequent, which has a rather high percentage of OT posts. Are OT posts acceptable?
On the other board, every so often, someone starts complaining that "this is a board, why all the OT posts?" The other board is for sailors of small boats, and the response is usually:
"This board is about sailors, not sailing. Therefore, anything anyone wants to discuss is fair game. OT posts are marked as such; if you don't want to read them, don't."
None of us comes to this board with ONLY interest in Bad Movies...we are all complicated folks with interesting lives and backgrounds. Personally, I think OT posts help us get to know each other, and again, if you don't want to read OT threads, you certainly don't have to.
So, what are all of your thoughts? Should we try to limit OT threads to the 'only very occasional'?
I know, I know, asking OT questions about the 'rules' of the board is gay.
I think it doesn't matter...
I hope you realize how unintentionally ironic that post was.
I think the off-topic posts are often a sign of what a close community this board has become. People are getting to know one another, and wanting to know more. "I know what you think about movies, but what do you think about this?" I found it really enlightening when we all shared our obsessive-compulsive tendencies. People on this board make announcements, share problems, ask advice. I think that's all great.
Naturally, I wouldn't want to see OT posts take over, but I don't think there's any danger of that. After all, for many of us, this is the only place we can get a really good discussion of b-movies, and it's something we all love to talk about.

All irony intended. ;)
The OT posts are great. LIke Andy said, it helps us get to know one another better. If we stuck solely to movie-related stuff with no personal insight whatsoever, we'd end up seeing a "What's your favorite kaiju?" post at least once a week. We need the OT's to keep things fresh.
Brother R
Well said Brother R.
And besides, some of the most amusing threads I've started have been Off Topic.
And they almost always get tons of responses!
my LIFE is off topic - why not write about it? 'Nuff said.
I like OT posts, but I also like the "OT" label in the subject line to let people know its OT if they're not interested in anything but movies at that particular moment.
"This board is about sailors, not sailing. Therefore, anything anyone wants to discuss is fair game. OT posts are marked as such; if you don't want to read them, don't."
On the ChurchBass list (Bassist who play in churches) we always tag those as "NBC" for "No Bass Content"
OT posts are fine. Anyone who doesn't want to read them can just skip over them.
What Eirik said....
I love OT posts. I have trouble discussing movies beyond "I liked it." Or "I didn't like it."
OT posts are interesting. Unfortunately, they're the ones most likely to descend into flammage.
Did I just say "flammage?"
Oh, dear God, no...
Look, if you're going to invent words, event cool sounding words. I mean, that's the least you can do.
What a sillagoose.
