Title: Teenaged Caveman (2003)... Painful bad films?
Post by: Bgrade on February 15, 2004, 10:24:31 PM
I love bad and poorly acted films more than most (hell I even like films like The Killer Eye). However, there are films that go beyong just being bad.

Generally films fall into either..
1) Good-Bad.  Which we all like.
2) Bad-Boring. Which we all shut off.

But then there is a stage worse than "bad boring".  There is Bad-Painful and mentally wounding.  Films you just wish you wouldn't have watched. Not necessarily because they are disturbing or morally "off", but  more because they are violetly opposed to your natural karma.

"Teenaged Caveman" is one of these movies for me.  It is not that it is really that poorly done.  It is just that it shouldn't have been done.  It pains me to know it was made.

Anyone else see this film?

What are movies that fall into this catagory for you?

I've seen the first half but have never seen the ending although I do know what happens.
I thought it was alright.

I even have the mutant Creature Feature toy model by Stan Winston.
As a matter of fact I have ALL of the Creature Feature toys.

.             "Welcome to Oblivion."  Kidding, was this one of those Careature Feature films that Stan Winston did for HBO [I did like the first, with Randy Quaid!!].  I know it was on HBO a lot several months ago, bunch of naked teenagers (and they look it, bad in my book) talking about existentialism for at least half an hour.   I kept waking up to this, (NOTE: I may have the wrong film, or I may have a fudged-up imagination) and good god was it boring.
.             Bad-boring.  Well, any "hip" film would work here.  My mind comes and goes, can't really remember a title.  My personal karma was not wounded, but it did hurt, my day.  I know Harry Benshoff wrote about the "Teen-age" films of the '50's and 60's, but I really couldn't see any relationship between this and the previous examples, from what I read (haven't seen the K-lassics).  I guess it's one of the underground films coming out like "Ginger Snaps," "Donnie Darko," (both on HBO, but not by HBO) etc.  films you love and "get"or you really think they're boring.  Lion's Gate and Artisan deliver a lot of these.
.              btw, kudos for liking "The Killer Eye," uh, that's like "Popcorn,"  GREAT IDEA, poor execution, but I still like it too.

That's the one.  It was the teenaged existentialism combined with trying to be cool that really hurt me.

Ginger snaps is also one of those Bad-painful movies to me.
I recieved it as a gift.  I've tried to watch three times but can't get past the first 20 minutes.

I guess I just shouldn't watch films with moody teens.

Killer eye was part of a killer "organ" weekend along with "The killer tongue".  Good times. Good times.

Yeah, "Teenage Caveman" is a pretty miserable film.  I would put it in my "annoying" stack of movies.

You know another one that I recently stumbled across on DVD that is "annoying?"  That would be "Syngenor."  The old CEO acting crazy even started to get to me, like the character had been created as a personal affront.

I really liked Syngenor the first time I watched it. the commercial like clips at the end are great.  However, I got this for a friend for X-mas and lets just say that it doesn't stand-up well to repeat viewings. I agree the CEO acting nuts was annoying the second time.

On a similar note Cyborg 2 went from good to annoying with a second viewing.

What are other movies that not only don't stand up to repeat viewing well but actually go from good to bad.  (Maybe this should be a new thread)

.   .   .  .  "C.H.U.D.;" "Martians Go Home;" "She;" "Terror in the Aisles;" aren't bad, but they have gotten worse over time.
