I have never seen Starship Troopers. I first became aware of this flick in the theatre (don't remember what we were there to see), and my wife and I, both B-fans, both said 'nah, don't want to see that.'
However, I have read some comments about it on here.
Then, last night, a friend from another forum told me some about it, and got my interest up.
Any thoughts? Will this movie be worth the price of rental?
Watch it!
Starship Troopers is a fantastic scifi flick with all of the Verhoren touches you would expect. Gore, monsters, bad acting and all around fun. Seriously, watch this film. Fantastic stuff!
YES
I hope you dont have a weak stomach..there is ALOT of gore in this movie! Thats why its so good!
Hell yeah, check it out! If you dig crazy sci-fi and/or Verhoven flicks, it'll be right up your alley. Plenty of gore to go along with the craziness too.
Starship Troopers is one of my favorites. Buckets of gore and some of the best satirical humor since Dr. Strangelove. (To be expected, considering Robocop was a Verhoeven/Numeier collaboration as well.)
"Starship Troopers" is pretty lousy.
The only good part is the special effects of the ships in space being blown up.
Everything else is inane
Worth a rental if your friend is paying
Starship Troopers is ok. The effects are good, but the story is pretty basic. It kind of clobbers you over the head with it's message of how only "citizens" matter, along with some fairly tasteless fake public service announcements.
Its ok. I say rent it, just so you can see it and get its viewing out of your way.
Sure its got blood and big bugs but the story sucks and I can't get past the whole faschism is good theme.
Well, i think Verhoven intended the Faschisim to be part of the satire, but it may not have come across as well he thought it did.
Gory as a war pic would be, for those who prefer gore.
But, man....did Logic ever take a vacation on THIS one!
Ask Andrew....these tactical geniuses deserve to be et!

The acting ranges from average to very bad, but the special effects are good and the action scenes are intense. I bought it way back when it was first released on DVD. It is definitely worth the price of a rental.
If anyone (in the US) isn't sure about Starship Troopers, just wait a couple weeks and it'll be on FX again.
I fail to see how the movie advocates fascism. That's the book's department. Saying Starship Troopers is pro-fascist is like saying Robocop is pro-corporate.
I'd say pass, especially if you have read the book. Just too mindless for me. If you need a giant bug fix, rent Them!.
Kirk
Rent it if for no other reason than it is fairly frequently discussed/mentioned in this forum. The "Facism Message" you're hearing about mostly amounts to the National Socialist chic of the uniforms (imagine Doogie Howser in the SS)... but if you watch closely the whole picture does seem to be a semi-retarded refutation of the anti-war movie "All's Quiet on the Western Front."
The action is okay if you can get past the fact that a human race that has mastered interstellar travel can't seem to perfect a more effective personal assault weapon against the aliens... nor did they appear to have preserved the 20th century technology of armored vehicles. Dialogue is cheesey, acting is worthy of the dialogue. I would have liked it better if it had been a little less polished with a little more to laugh at. Lots of good gore.
Yep.
NO POWER ARMOR! I have an issue of Dark Horses "Starship Troppers" comic, and they did a kick ass power suit, so its just the inability of the producers/writers to come up with one. I realy think so.
Klendathu? Nuke it! You only use infantry when you have to preserve a resource, and it did not look like an un-expendable planet...and if it was, they should have said so.
Hey, even Tanks and IFVs are available for this thing. Tanker bugs Vs. Tanks, okey? They modified Ruger Mini-14 rifles for the troopers small arms....what, an M-113 is too big a task?
Sheesh....

According to what I read, they considered it too expensive to do the power armor unless they used CGI, and then it would have been CGI soldiers fighting CGI bugs.
Dude...go and rent it!
I saw it in the theater and loved it!
I have since seen it many times on VHS and DVD and trust me guy...it's good.
The propaganda reels are hilarious.
The only thing I didn't like was the boy/girl crap between the main characters and Denise Richards DOES NOT STOP smiling throughout the entire film except in the end when a warrior bug puts its leg through her shoulder. OUCH!
It's one of those films where you must SERIOUSLY suspend disbelief and have fun with it...which I did.
As for the facist part of it...who cares!
Many of you constantly compare it to the book but how many Hollywood films are exactly like the book?
Almost none are.
I like this film.
Go rent it!

Starship Troopers is defenitely one of the better sci-fi films of recent years. The effects are amazing, and despite some wooden acting, it's an exciting roller coaster of a movie. Michael Ironside's in it - what more does a film need ?
Rent it and enjoy.
If you're one of these weirdos who analyses a film frame by frame, looks for the wires, picks out flaws in plot, etc, and demands that each film you watch give you a philosophical awakening...don't bother and go buy a copy of 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance' by Robert M. Pirsig.
If, however, you watch films to be entertained, watch Starship Troopers! I saw it twice at the cinema and own it on video.
As for nuking it...well, i'm glad it was Paul Verhoven making it, because nuking Klendathu would make for a very short, pointless film!
And the reason the don't use tanks is simple. they are called the Mobile Infantry, implying that although they are on foot, they can go places inaccessable by land vehicles.
"If the book's better, why are you in a cinema and not in a library?"
I loved it. The first half is like Beverly Hills 90210 - then they take the cute kids and toss them into a bloodbath of a war. Great fun!

Obviously you never read the book and how it *really* describes a possible sci-fi mobile infantry in action
"And the reason the don't use tanks is simple. they are called the Mobile Infantry, implying that although they are on foot, they can go places inaccessable by land vehicles."
Ah, like all those flat, desert planets with no vegetation and long-range lines of sight? Yes, I can see how a tank would pretty useless in a place like that. Much better to drop hundreds of soldiers haphazard across the battlefield where crossfires alone would ensure 80% casualties.
Nope, not read the book, yet. But one of the ones I plan to read soon. In the middle of reading El Sid by David Dalton and Teach Yourself HTML And XHTML In 24 Hours, so I'm a bit busy reading-at the moment! :o)

Lon-range lines of sight? I could've sworn one scene was set in a tight valley, and another scene was set in a narrow set of underground tunnels.
But if you think tanks would be good to use in those places, fair enough....personally, I think it would've been bloody daft to go into a tunnel only ten feet wide with a tank. much better with foot troopers...
