Title: Jack the Giant Killer (1961)
Post by: Scott on March 10, 2004, 08:01:44 PM
JACK THE GIANT KILLER (1961) - This is a fantasy film of the top kind. At moments good and moments bad (in a good way). The film has Harryhausen type stop-motion giants that are pretty good. The story has everything from vikings, lepraucans, princess, hero, king, sorceror, witches, and giant creatures. Some of the special effects are dated and yet interesting. It is not the story of Jack and the Bean stalk, so you can forget about the misleading title. Check it out as you may be able to catch it on FLIX like I did. Worth a good look.

Just a note that the film is in color and FLIX is showing the non-dubbed music version. I've read there is a poor musical version, but FLIX is showing the good one.

I've always wanted to see this. I remember a commerical for it that showed this "Wind Witch" and I thought it was pretty cool and scary looking.

The witches have some creepy looking scenes and then some BUGALOO type looking scenes, but all in all a good film.

I can actually remember reading this in 5th grade!

The book had a moment where Jack fooled a giant by putting some kind of cornmeal into a pouch in his shirt. He tells a giant that he can stab himself and he will not be hurt. He does this and the cornmeal spews out. Upon which, the giant grabs the knife and says "If you can do that, so can I!" and promptly kills himself.

Such a great story, now I will have to find this little gem. Thanks!

Deej, did you also watch H.R. PUFFINSTUFF and SIGMUND AND THE SEA MONSTERS. And don't forget LAND OF THE LOST and SHAZAM and ISIS.

Well, JACK THE GIANT KILLER isn't all like that, but not far from it.

Land of the Lost and Shazam...yes. The others I missed out on. I swear, I haven't even thought of The Bugaloos in 20 years! It all came flooding back and I was surprised to find that I still remember the damn Bugaloos song. I begin therapy Monday!

Yep, the BUGALOOS is a hard one to forget. Phyllis Diller starred in this one.

H.R. PUFFINSTUFF still scares me.
