Title: finally saw the TCM remake...
Post by: jmc on March 31, 2004, 12:05:29 PM
...and it wasn't bad.  Not great, and certainly not on the level of the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake.  But not as terrible as I thought it might be.

I liked the different directions this movie took, liked the characters and the creepiness of the set design [though still not as good as the original in that respect.]  The movie doesn't skimp on the gore [though the deleted scenes show some scenes that were cut for an R.]  I didn't like that they made a backstory for Leatherface, gave him a name, and even showed him without a mask on.  I think it's scarier not to know anything about him, or to speculate what he might look like.
I think it was a bad idea to set it in the early 70s, because it just doesn't ring true even though they try to have posters of Alfred E. Neuman, Skynyrd on the radio and so on.  The movie doesn't have the same gritty feeling of the original, or as good of a sense of uneasiness and terror in the early moments.  There are probably too many characters.  Still, nothing that really made me feel like I regretted watching it and it didn't take away from my enjoyment of it.

But all in all, a good movie worth seeing, and that's about all you can ask.   It was a pretty respectful remake.  But unlike DAWN OF THE DEAD, TCM is really timeless, and this movie really doesn't do anything new other than going into a different direction storywise at times and being a little more explicit in its violence.
The movie probably didn't need to be made.  Still, you could do a lot worse.

Well, I thought it was better than 28 DAYS LATER....it was probably about the same as CABIN FEVER.   In general, I guess I'd say it was harmless.

I felt that it was on a par with the original in my opinion.

(Read: Didn't really care for either film)

dude, how could you say TCM is timeless.........have you no knowledge of the film whatsoever? it is a f**king "period piece" if you even know what that means. you are killing me with your wild random off the hip statements about horror films. Are you a fan or not and if so, why do you know so little about the films you talk about. As RUN-DMC said in the 80's.."WAKE UP".........i'm guessing you know who RUN-DMC are.....Take care Joey. Hugs and Kisses. ~Ben

I've noticed that people who didn't like the original or aren't great fans of it tend to like the newer one as well, sometimes better.  I think the original is great...this one is okay.  I think the main reason is just that I'm surprised it wasn't terrible due to the people involved in making it.

The funniest part to me is in one of the behind-the-scenes things they talk about how they "tried to get the snuff-film look" of the original but just couldn't get it to work.

I couldn't agree with you more. I thought it was pretty intresting and the seens from the basement were nice and dark, but the pure insanity and madness of the OG. By the way, do you have an e-mail address? Or maybe you can just answer me here. Do you know of any good Dawn Remake sites that break the film down? The only damn site i keep coming across is the movie site, advertising the movie....no meat. please help.

I haven't found any yet....it will probably take some enterprising fan to do it over the next year or so.  Most of the great sites dedicated to the original are ran by people who hate the remake so they aren't doing much other than bashing it.  It's too bad, because some of the original DAWN fan sites are some of the best movie sites out there.
