Title: FLAVIA, THE HERETIC (1974)
Post by: The Burgomaster on April 18, 2004, 07:43:43 PM
I bought this DVD, which is the uncensored version of an Italian film that was also released under the more exploitative title, FLAVIA, PRIESTESS OF VIOLENCE.

I was surprised to see that the movie has higher production values than most Italian "drive-in" imports from the 1970s.  Some of the cinematography is very striking, and the entire look of the film is more impressive than what I would have expected.

But, ultimately, the movie does rely heavily upon "shocking" scenes, including:

* A woman being raped;
* A horse being castrated;
* A woman being tortured and having one of her nipples sliced off;
* A man being impaled on a sharp piece of an iron fence (which goes up his ass and comes out near his collar bone);
* A woman being skinned alive by having the skin near her ankle pulled all the way up to her thigh.

The plot concerns Flavia, a young woman whose strict father forces her to join a convent.  Flavia is disillusioned by religion and by the way the world operates on 2 sets of standards: 1 for men and 1 for women.  Flavia's feminist philosophy results in her leaving the convent and joining an army of Moslem's who attack the convent and the village.

Overall, this is a pretty good movie . . . but it's not really the "horror movie" that I expected.  It is more of an exploitative historical adventure, with a gore scene every 15 minutes or so.

It would make a nice "sleaze" double feature with MARK OF THE DEVIL (although, FLAVIA is a superior movie to MARK OF THE DEVIL).

If you're a fan of 1970s Euro/Sex/Gore movies, it is worth seeing on one of those nights when you can't decide what you want to watch.
