Title: Chronicles of Riddick
Post by: Ravenlocke on May 17, 2004, 11:53:45 AM
I've got the feeling this is going to be the sleeper hit this year like The Matrix in '99:  small numbers at first, but will gain momentum and be in the box office for about 6 months and rake in $250-$300 million.  It looks friggin epic.

Naw, it's going to open HUGE!  The questions is whether it will be there for the long haul or not.  I could see a big drop off happening, though I hope it does well.

Twohy deserves a big hit at this point in his career.  It was criminal how BELOW sank without a chance at a decent distribution.

Any one else think this has a DUNE kinda look to it? From the trailers, anyway.

I can't even pronounce "Riddick" right.

Rid - Dick?

But PITCH BLACK rocked!

Hey,
Im not sure, but I loved Pitch Black and waited and waited for news of Below. I had read about it in EW and was like this next one sounds excellent, and Pitch Black was awesome too. In any case after not hearing anything for sometime, I assumed that Ghost Ship was his movie Below and saw it. AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! SO BAD! Unfortunately all the people who havent seen Pitch Black say that the preview for Riddick looks dull and I don't disagree with them, so my guess is small release, YES.

Yea, I liked PITCH BLACK also and THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK preview looked good.

Another film that looked good was KING AUTHOR and THE DAY AFTER TOMMOROW.

BELOW was excellent.  I picked up the DVD a few months ago and really enjoyed the move.  It is NOT the same movie as GHOST SHIP.

The Chronicles of Riddick just looks good?

Dude, this film looks so totally badass!!

It looks like it has a huge budget with tons of cool effects and a great story.

I'm so there opening weekend.

I saw the trailer at Kill Bill 2 and thought that it did look kinda like Dune, but also looked good.  Although I'm pretty sure it won't do that well: audiences tend not to respond well to Sci Fi movies like this one.

I'm not so sure about that this time around.
Vin Diesel has accumulated a TON of starpower since Pitch Black was released years ago.

I think many people will go to see it simply just to watch his performance without ever having seen the 1st film.

I personally WILL be going primarily for his performance....he was a f**kin' badass in Pitch Black and I'm sure he'll kick ass again in this one!

Vin's track record for me is 80% crap/ 20% good. I thought XXX was hokey as all get out but it was laughably watchable. Man Apart looked like a combo of Gibson's Payback/ Ransom movie without the action so I never bothered watching it and so did 300 million other people. Was it good? You tell me! Vin was the best actor in Fast & the Furious but then again Paul Walker could be a Macy's store window dummy for all his acting range. (Fast & the Furious is where Vin took off as far as a main stream action star, not Pitch Black) Boiler Room was a bit of a yawn and I can't remember what Vin Deisel actually did in that movie?? Was he a good guy? Second banana buddy? Saving Private Ryan Vin Deisel was in for 10 miuntes before he was wasted. The only semi-star vehicle for Vin Deisel where he stands out talent wise is Pitch Black. The Chronicles of Riddick so far from the trailer looks nothing like Pitch Black but maybe like The Road Warrior it will be 200% better than its original? I like the look of Dune but Riddick better not copy the pace and jumbled story line. I better see a decent trailer soon or it will be a cable only movie for me.

"Vin Diesel has accumulated a TON of starpower since Pitch Black was released years ago."

like the ghoul said, it was Fast and furious which made him 'a star'

I like the guy and all that, but he isn't exactly what I call a drawcard.  Especially considering his last two films weren't exactly that popular.

That being said, I actually want him to succeed and go well with Chronicles, its just a sad fact in life that he probably won't.

Personally I didn't care much for Pitch Black.  It was okay until the girl (captain or whatever) had some sort of nervous breakdown halfway through.  She was the only character I liked and then she lost it.  Vin Diesel was supposed to be a scary murderer, he didn't pull that off at all.  Maybe not his fault, probably the director's.

But the previews for Riddick look pretty good.  I think Diesel could be a good actor if the part is right.  And the special effects look pretty cool.  A little bit like dune I suppose.

vin diesel can't act

the movie would have been better with him just looking cool not trying to act. I don't see this as a sleeper hit, i bet it might be popular on dvd.

The movie was average entertainment. Either way I'm a happy camper, I didn't have to pay anything for it since i got the free ticket from the Pitch Black dvd (which I love)

Just curious.

Susan said it best.

This movie isn't really good, but it isn't really bad either.

Diesel can't act to save his life. Twohy is an OK director, I won;t give him the accolades everyone else does because he doesn't deserve it, but he is better than 60% of the s**t directors working today.

Are you kidding!!! If anything he is the most inventive and compelling action director except for Guillermo Del Toro of the Blade series or the Wachowski Brothers.

Also, his beautiful metaphores of cameras as an eye, especially in his work in Pitch Black are wonderful. His angles are used to great effect as you can see from all of the dizzying effects in the opening necro. montage. I dare you to name a better action/special effects/sci fi series in the last ten years. Star Wars???

I heard Vin Diesel was braging about how he know was going to become a big star years before he did. People like that annoy me,most of them will never be nothing except for a few lucky ones like him. Most critics agree that he can't act,he just has that right tough guy look.

one thing tha I have to say that annoys me about action films is when they are filmed with such blurry camera motions and fast movements that you really can't see crap! there were some fight sequences in riddick i would have enjoyed more if they weren't just a motion of blur

I am not a Vin fan at all... but I mean, come on, what action stars CAN really act? Schwarzenneger, Stallone? Segal?
