Title: More Remake Insanity - The Crazies
Post by: Mr_Vindictive on May 17, 2004, 10:39:39 PM
Yup.  Seems that yet another Romero remake is in the works.  A production company by the name of Penn Station has just bought the rights to George Romero's semi-prequel to NOTLD called The Crazies.  Much lesser known film compared to the dead films but still great in it's own right.

Why must Hollywood keep making remakes of GOOD FRIGGIN FILMS!?  It hurts my brain to even contemplate how stupid these execs are!

Hopefully it will get pretty good treatment as Dawn suprisingly did.

Only time will tell I guess......

Man! I haven't even seen the orignal Crazies yet along with The Dead Next Door I really want to see that. Are either on DVD yet? Oh and that's just insane about another remake. BONEHEADS!

"The Crazies" is out on DVD and I think that this is one of the better plague films.  Romero usually had a good knack for concentrating on the plight of a small group.  Though them he would expand the scope, making the problem larger than his budget would make you expect.  Maybe he is just good at finding desolate sections of towns and using emergency radio broadcasts...

I have to say, if they do as good a job with this as with Dawn of the Dead, than Romero should be more than happy.

I just borrowed the Crazies from the library at uni on DVD [I love that library it's got all the coolest stuff] and though I haven't watched it yet, the guy at the counter praised me for getting such a good movie.

In case anyone is wondering, the dvd has a commentary by Romero, interview with Lynn Lowry and trailers and the usual extra crap.  No making of though :P

So what if theyre going to remake The Crazies, the remakes of Night and Dawn were great, although obviously as not as good as the originals. This could be interesting.

yeah Skaboi it is sorry that the film industry doesn't want to produce original work anymore and just re-hash old films. but that's capitalism for you!

the original Crazies was extremely low-budget, and from listening to the commentary track on the dvd there was a lot that Romero wish he would've done different technical wise, even he will admit it's a flawed film in many areas. but i still like it of course, maybe the remake will bring something new, like a new context to a classic Romero story of chaos and society falling apart at the seams.

I don't feel as negative about this as I did about the DAWN remake when I first heard about it [and which I ended up really enjoying.]  Romero didn't really have the budget to do the movie the way it should have been done, so this could be interesting--I hope they have the guts to include at least a little of the original's social commentary in this case, because unlike DAWN, this movie really depends on it to be effective.

I thought Romero was disappointed with the "Dawn of the Dead" remake... because it was 100 times better than the original and it cut out the weak, psuedo-intellectual "social commentary" about consumerism.

not really, although it does have a lot of the elements of Romero's zombie films, the whole chaotic-society falling apart themes. it's more of a 70's, hippie, paranoia, government-conspiracy film. now how's that for some labels, i should be a music critic!!
