Title: Master and Commander (2003)
Post by: Scott on May 18, 2004, 11:59:53 AM
MASTER AND COMMANDER (2003) - Good film about a British ship hunting down a more modern French ship. Some interesting characters were the Doctor and the boy who lost his arm when the French ship. There was also a brutal sea battle in the fog at the beginning. The action and situations are well done. I've never been a big fan of Russel Crowe, but he does and effective job as the ship commander as he did in THE GLADIATOR. The final battle is also very good.

I kinda like THE MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY and THE BOUNTY a bit better as overall films, but MASTER AND COMMANDER is also good. Not to mention the good old Errol Flynn movies like CAPTAIN BLOOD and THE SEAHAWK.

I liked Master & Commander but it was lacking something that I just could not put my finger on.

The film was very good for depicting life at sea for those men and had other good qualities about it but it was missing something...

Anybody else also think that and what did you think it was missing?

Glad you brought this up, Scott. I finally saw it a few nights ago, and enjoyed it very much. I haven't read the books on which it's based, but I'm huge on the sea-faring flicks. I've liked Crowe in everything I've seen him in, and thought he did very well here, I felt his character was less gruff than usual.

For similar viewing, check out the Horatio Hornblower flicks on A&E, those are usually pretty good.

Ash it was missing something. I'm not sure if it was the fact that they never seemed to come into port or not. They were never around civilization.

Deej, I've been wanting to see HORATIO HORNBLOWER, but haven't had the chance.

By the way Deej and Ashthecat don't go to see the movie TROY. I hear it was terrible, but I went the other day and found the film a very good ancient times type film. I also wanted to see the new ALAMO movie and it didn't get good reviews, guess I'll have to wait now till the DVD comes out.

Yeah, Scott, I've read some of the comments. I still wanna check it out though, I guess I'll never learn. I also want to see King Arthur, The Alamo, and The Day After Tomorrow(I'm a disaster movie SUPER FREAK!).

If, you get a chance, the Horatio Hornblower movies are definitely worth your time. What are your thoughts on a Master and Commander sequel? I understand that there is a whole series of books..think they'll make another one?

No doubt they could. It would be like the voyages of the Star Trek Enterprise at sea. They finished off MASTER AND COMMANDER with the idea there is more ahead for them.

I sure hope they continue with addition M&C movies.  However, it is going to be hard to keep true to the books at all.  M&C melded two of the books (#1 and #10), with a lot of little pieces from several of the others thrown in.

I have read that this one was just to test the waters...to see if American audiences would like the historical drama as written by Patrick O'Brian.  Hopefully, they saw the signs needed to make additional ones.

The books are great..if you like reading at all, I highly recommend them.
