Yesterday I caught a bit of Ice Pirates on TV. It looks a bit like a Mel Brooks spoof of Flash Gordon, but without the jokes (albeit with a Brian Blessed lookalike). After about 10 minutes, I gave up. Is it worth pusuing further?
I always liked it. But that says more about me than about the movie.
It has some good parts. Ash wrote a reader review that I am finally going to post, but now I am out of my copy (someone borrowed it and did not return it), so I have to get another first.
Still, this was one of those goofy sci-fi flicks that I used to watch while younger and we thought it was gut-busting funny.
I enjoy Ice Pirates...seen it many times (tho it's been a while). Wasn't it released in 3-D? I seem to remember seeing it in 3-D at the theatre when it first came out...with specific memory of the nad-chopper from pov of the 'victim.'
I think it has sorta a cult following...one of those 'you either like it, or you don't' movies.
I liked it. Though, most people would take my liking a movie as a good reason to avoid it, but...
I liked it a million years ago but I haven't seen it in..well..a million years. I remember going to see it at the drive-in but it's one of those movie that i've never caught on tv nor had the urge to rent. I wouldn't mind seeing it on the tube sometime just to see what it was I liked about it to start with.
I still remember watching this movie in the theatre! I wanted to see the movie but my mom thought the commercials looked 'naughty.' So we compromised and she let me go to the movie as long as my dad went with me. (like he was going to cover my eyes during the dirty parts or something). About 30 minutes into the movie he fell asleep and snored throughout the rest of the movie.
I still love the movie but I will admit it was a lot funnier when I was ten years old.
You have that problem too? :)
I liked it - it had its moments and was a light bit of fun. At least they never made the mistake of taking themselves seriously.
Good clean dumb fun. I love the part when they get caught in the time warp (or whatever) towards the end, and the hero's son shows up to save the day. What a ghastly glimpse into the future!
I was wondering if you were planning on posting my review Andrew.
I re-sent you a revised copy many months ago and was wondering if you had received it.
Feel free to add in any finishing touches to it if you like.
I watched this one with Brother R. last year and he didn't like it...hopefully he likes my review better!
