Title: OT - I'm Having a Son
Post by: George on June 09, 2004, 08:04:27 AM
Well, not me personally, but my wife is.  Any-who, we're kicking around names and I just wanted to get some input from you guys.  Who better, in my opinion, to come up with cool names than this group.  Post away.

Congratulations!  But is this the best group for coming up with names?  For instance, how about Buckaroo Bonzi, or Criswell, or my own contribution whenever friends are having kids:  Jebediah Ezekial Zachariah.

Now whenever you use all three names, that kid will *know* he's in trouble.

How About Billy Pilgrim or Iseah, Iseah's probably a little more realistic though. Congratulations! :)

That's not so bad, if you're a Mennonite or from Arkansas.

Having grown up in Mennonite country myself, here are some boys' names you might not have considered: Orvie, Eli, Amsey, Laverne (yes, it's a boy's name here), Amos, Elo (tell people it's short for Electric Light Orchestra), Ion, Omer, and many more than I can remember here. Also popular are many common names that fell out of favour years ago. Like Murray. Every time I hear of a baby named Murray, I can't help imagining him crawling out of the crib, lighting up a smoke, and driving a grader. That fits most other Murrays I know, except that they're all over 50.

Biblical names are also generally popular, even the obscure ones, like Dorcas (oddly, a girl's name). Mind you, there are lots of good ones nobody ever touches - like Herod or Pilate or Judas. A favourite of mine is Onan, reputedly the inventor of masturbation. How could any son not live up to that name by the time he's 12?

All right! It's been so long since somebody asked for suggestions, the last one was Andrew (poor fool). How's about  Ash, Bill, Den (of Earth), or Raoh (Fist of the North Star). .  Congratioutions George.

I went to High School with a girl named Dorcas.

Congrats!!

:)

Do like homage names?  How about Ray Harryhausen {your last name here}.  He'll knew b-movie history by the time he's four.

Again, congrats!

The Ray Harryhausen ............would be great except that my last name is Ray.  Ray Harryhausen Ray just isn't quite right.  :-)

I do like the homage names....

Roger Corman (sp) Ray
George Lucas Ray
George Romero Ray
Russ Meyer Ray....lol
Ian Fleming Ray - I am a Bond fan

Any-hoo....keep em coming.

Yea, there really are hicks here, but then I 've known hicks from New York.

I know a guy named Laverne, and the nickname he goes by  "Peanut".

George, do either of you have any good family names from previous generations? My son is named after his Great Grandfather, who was dead before I came along.  My daughter's middle name is a modified version of  her maternal Grandmother's name.  We changed Frances to Francine.

Anyway you could get some ideas looking in that direction.

Fruit seems to be in at the moment.  Squash is one that wouldn't be picked yet.

How about naming the kid after a monster/evil character from B-movies?  Naming a kid 'Blob' would perhaps encourage a good self image [ouch, i just hit myself for writing that, sorry all] or perhaps 'the creeping terror'?

Just imagine yelling at your kid to come get dinner. "hurry up creeping terror, your dinner is getting cold!''

Who said they were a bond fan?  I always thougth the name Scorpius/Scorpio was a cool name.  Scaramanga also has a good ring to it, but would be more suited to a middle name.

Or perhaps, just go simple, with somehting that sounds good: there's really no need to be fancy or too creative.

I almost had my wife considering Archimedes as a possible middle name for a son. Almost. With  my luck, he'd probably suck at math anyway.

The Bond names are good. Oddjob, Jaws, Hugo Drax, or maybe Ernst Stavro Blofeld Ray.

I kind of liked Ray Harryhausen Ray - not perfect, but certainly better than Ray Jay Johnson Ray.

Andy is your last name Ray?

There's always...."X" or Xavier, so abbreviated it makes X. Ray ;-)
