Title: But wait, it's the SUPER DELUXE DVD EDITION!
Post by: Neon Noodle on June 13, 2004, 12:02:51 PM
It is so damn annoying to buy a dvd these days and within what seems like a month, another version comes out that has more junk, making the first one worthless (i.e. X men, X Men 1.5, X2 box set with improved version of X men)

It makes me wonder if I should wait 5 years before buying any DVD's - because this happens almost every single time I pick up a movie now.

Now, the Spider Man deluxe edition has hit the stores, and if anyone's picked it up, does it have the teaser trailer with spidey's web between the NY towers? I don't see any other reason to buy it.

Anyone else living with this frustration? Is there any way to stop the madness?

It always depends on what the new edition has to offer. But yes it IS annoying and it's clearly the studio's way of constantly making money several times over on a single movie. I should have known better than to buy the Bourne identity the other week at a dvd trading store, then I found out when surfing online the extended version is coming out with new beginning and ending along with a free ticket to the sequel. Dammit!

Good thing I'm really slow when it comes to buying DVD's. The time it takes me to save up for one is usually enough to time for them to churn out a new DVD. The only exception for me are the DVD's of giant monster movies. I havne't seen a "Destroy all Planets"/ "Gamera vs. Varias" DVD special. And yeah it annoys me that they keep adding itsy bitsy little new stuff.

yeah  its very annoying to buy a 20-30 something dvd to find out a month later that its coming again with deleted scenes. it makes you hesitant to buy the movie in the first place. i want to buy kill bill but knowing that since thier 2 movies ill wait when both come out and  get a set that will probably come with more goodies.

That's why I've become gunshy of buying any mainstream or popular cult DVD release when it first comes out.Plus I've found out that as much as I may like the extras, most really are only worth watching once or twice.

Makes me glad I'm not a huge Tolkein fan, how many re-re-expanded versions and deluxe releases of "Rings" can you squeeze out of fans before you alienate them? The same seems to go for the "Evil Dead" series.

I'm debating whether to hold off on buying the "Star Wars" original trilogy on DVD. I only want to buy it once, but I don't hold out much hope that Lucas will ever release the undoctored/updated versions as well as his so precious "special editions". Since he claims the earlier forms of the films don't exist any more, and can't seem to stop tampering with them.

I held off from buying the Dawn of the Dead DVD cause I know any minute now the Argento cut & Director's cut version is coming out wth a bunch of extras. It really does test patience.

I agree that this is so frustrating. Id rather have them do it as Spielburg did with Indiana Jones and Minority Report, giving you everything up front. It is only fair for the buyer.

However, for the casual LOTR fan like myself, I like the regular versions much better than the AMAZING SUPER EXTENDED PIA EDITION

Super Deluxe?  Wait until the Director's Platinum Criterion Collection edition comes out.
Seriously, I don't have to have the latest movie right away.  I'll wait until a good edition comes out, and then not worry if there's yet another version coming out.  (Of course, I get the LOTR boxed set for Christmas, but that's a special case).

Personally I don't care for special edition DVD's. I rarely watch the special features anyway. Deleted scenes are always boring. Alternate endings are often a joke (like "28 Days Later") or a flat out scam (like "Ronin"). And those behind the scenes specials aren't ever interesting to me in the slightest.

Plus, I avoid special version DVD's because I know that buying them would make me feel like a chump.

The only time I've ever re-purchased a movie to see it's special features was when I bought the new "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" DVD for the Hunter S. Thompson commentary. I love how crazy and incoherent that old man is, and I find his every word fascinating.

BTW, since so many people mentioned it, I'll wait for the extended wide-screen LOTR's trilogy to hit stores... that's a DVD set that everyone should've expected to hit stores in multiple versions. If you bought the set early you have no right to complain about having to buy the special versions for the special features.

i love the special edition Fear And Loathing IN Las Vegas too. the old documentary and the gun shooting and the crazy phone calls during the commentary by hunter are hilarious.

I went ahead and bought the KILL BILL and DAWN discs because they've been talking about the DAWN box set for a long while now and I wouldn't be surprised if they pushed the release date back for the fourth time.  With KILL BILL Tarrantino has waited so incredibly long to release definitive DVDs of his films---like eight to ten years--that I wasn't wanting to change that he might do the same thing with KILL BILL.

Somewhere...in a sharp, plush, high rise office with a view, a marketing exec in a armani suit and leather shoes is softly whispering under his breath...."cha-ching"
