Title: What Real Planet Would You Visit?
Post by: Ash on June 26, 2004, 02:21:04 AM
There are 9 planets in the Milky Way.
If you think about it from a tourist's perspective, that's a lot of s**t to see and do!

If you had a choice to visit any of the other 8 planets in our solar system, which one would it be and what would you do once there?

My personal choice would be Jupiter, the largest planet with the most violent storms this side of our galaxy.

Assuming the technology was available, I would have myself strapped into the most state of the art spacesuit capable of withstanding anything that was thrown at it and have myself jettisoned from a low orbit into The Great Red Spot on Jupiter.

(cool link)
http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr161/lect/jupiter/redspot.html

I'd be kind of like the most insane airplane or base jumper you ever met.

I would scream "YEEEEEEEE-HAWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!" "f**k YEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!" as I entered it and was flung to & fro by strong winds that  defied imagination!
I would surf the cyclone for a few minutes and then an automatic transporter beacon would activate and I would be beamed back to the ship.
Back on board I'd be sitting down removing my helmet and a crew member would be there with me asking, "Well dude, what did ya think?"  and I'd say, "What a f**kin' rush!" and then I'd either puke all over or s**t myself.
Hehe!

I'd be like an extreme sport junkie only 10 times worse or better depending on how you looked at it.
People would say, "Yeah he's from Iowa but he's a crazy sunofab***h!"

What would you do on your selected planet?

(Yes you must suspend disbelief for this thread!)

A trip to Mons Olympus on Mars, as Dr. Manhattan.

  I want to go to Mars. Come on, everybody wants to go to mars!!! Plus it would be so tight, walking around. I'm getting off subject but, ya. MARS!!!

Ash - hope technology has really advanced by then since you'd have to travel at over 133 thousand miles per hour to get out of it's gravity field. I wouldn't ever go there simply because of the gravity, you know how heavy you feel getting out of the pool? Just imagine as it's over 250% more than earth. I'd have to have a couch to sit down because after ten steps i'd probably need to take a nap.

We need to find wormholes in space, i'd love to be able to see galaxies that are billions and billions and billions of miles away from ours.

Jupitar sounds like fun I'd go there for the super gravity if I had a space suit that stomped it from crushing me. With all the gravity on me It'd be like lifting weights but I'm just walking!

Or I could visit Mars. Nice and close to earth and RED! With martians.

"There are 9 planets in the Milky Way."

Not to pick your post apart, but I think you're wrong. I believe the Milky Way is the galaxy that contains our solar system.

You beat me to it :)

Even the '9' is likely wrong...there are some Kuiper Belt objects that astronmers can't decide if they should be called planets or not (which could push the total up to 12 or so, I think) or whether Pluto itself should be just called a Kuiper Belt object

The official total is 8, as Pluto is now regarded as a comet/asteroid and not a planet.

Mars possibly to see the elusive Bat Rat Spider Crab

yes he's quite possibly the coolest thing on any planet

Oh sorry...it was late at night when I wrote this thread.

I knew that

Oh sorry...it was late at night when I wrote this thread.

Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown,
And things seem hard or tough,
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft,
And you feel that you've had quite eno-o-o-o-o-ough,

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And reolving at nine thousand miles an hour.
It's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
'Round the sun that is the source of all our power.
Now the sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see,
Are moving at a million miles a day,
In the outer spiral arm, at fourteen thousand miles an hour,
Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way.

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred million stars;
It's a hundred thousand light-years side to side;
It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light-years thick,
But out by us it's just three thousand light-years wide.
We're thirty thousand light-years from Galactic Central Point,
We go 'round every two hundred million years;
And our galaxy itself is one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

Our universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding,
In all of the directions it can whiz;
As fast as it can go, that's the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth;
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth!

-Monty Python -"Galaxy Song"

Title: Depends

upon who you're asking..  Sure that planetarium in NY (forgot the name) no longer calls Pluto a planet, but the international astronomical union (I think that's the name) still calls Pluto a planet.

My choice would be Mars because it is the most earthlike.  I would also love to have a nicely shielded ship to zoom around Jupiter and Saturn, but those planets don't have any ground on them (plus the incredibly high gravity would destroy one's heart)

I'd pick Mars also. After Earth, it's the most likely to have once held life.

What? No mention of the Rings?
I like to be Lord of Saturn's rings!
How could would that be. When the dim sun light hits the ice just right....
