Title: The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (1956)
Post by: Scott on July 17, 2004, 08:54:28 PM
THE PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES (1956) - This is film clearly a bad movie. The sea monster may possibly be worst than Roger Cormans early monster films. The creature ooks like an albino cucumber/manitee thing with ping pong eyes and rubber skin. Picked this DVD for $3.99 from Front Row Entertainment. You might recognize actor Kent Taylor who stars in this film as he did a number of B-movies including some of the "Blood" films from Eddie Romero in the Philippines. One of the best moments was at the end when Taylor says "Some things in nature were meant to be undisturbed and this was one of them" and the same may be said of this film.

OMG, I just picked this up on  5-movie DVD along with such greats as The Giant Gila Monster, The Brain that Wouldn't Die, and Kilers from Space.  Safeway, $5.99.

I love how the title manages to rip off both Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. A pity they didn't know that a league is a unit of distance (about three miles) and not depth. I think a lot of people make that mistake, perhaps misunderstanding the title of Jules Verne's book.

I suppose the movie was ahead of its time in one way - it had ping-pong-ball eyes a number of years before Al Adamson.

This is pretty bad ... they show you the (so-called) monster within the first 5 minutes of the film. I got this as part of a 12 dvd, 50 movie horror set. Check out www.treelinefilms.com. They have  50 movie sci-fi and horror packs. You can find these sets for about $30 a piece on ebay and other sites. A great way to get lots of bad (and a few good) movies for cheap ...chris AndyC wrote:

This makes me wonder how many movies are titled "The Phantom of . . . " or "The Phantom from . . . " or just "The Phantom . . . "

* PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES
* PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
* PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE
* PHANTOM PLANET
* THE PHANTOM
* PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH
* PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE

I'm sure we can all think of quite a few more

I'm just curious as to what makes this sea monster a 'phantom' at all, except that it makes the title sound cooler.

Sometimes you find some good ones in those big packs that you never heard of. I like buying those cheapies.

The Burgomaster,

how about W. Lee Wilder's PHANTOM FROM SPACE.
