I have a friend who loves horror movies, and a few of us would like to add to her collection for her birthday.
Would like to hear anyone's top 5 picks of all time that we can choose from
Thanks!
These are not in order (and if I think about it longer, I might think of 5 different movies), but here goes:
* THE EXORCIST
* THE OMEN
* ROSEMARY'S BABY
* INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (technically sci-fi, but still scary)
* NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
well is she looking for ones that are actually horrific, comedic, or a combination? more like old style horror from the 40s, or 80s slasher movies like Halloween and Friday13th, or new age make-it-up-we-aren't-showing-you type movies like 6th sense?
i would recommend:
"Ghostriders" - just funny, B- 80s murderous ghosts movie
"Evil Dead 1" along with "Army of Darkness" - classic, she probably has it
"House on Haunted Hill" (the original b&w) and "Last Man on Earth" (both starring Vincent Price)
[you can get both on Amazon.com on one DVD "House on Haunted Hill/The Last Man On Earth (1959)" I got mine a long while back really cheap]
She does have Evil Dead...she doesn't care too much for anything more onthe scifi side...more B slasher, gore, like Hell Raiser. But also likes anything that is twisted and a complete mind trip. She loved the visuals in The Cell.
Thanks
or if you are thinking more scary maybe for watching with a girlfriend, i like:
Halloween
Hellraiser
Exorcist
Event Horizon (sci fi horror)
The Ring
or search amazon for this 12 disk set running under $30.00 new... called "50 Movie Horror Classics". Just search it and see the random assortment of titles. A lot of great movies from the past, and looks like it would cost more, for 12 2 sided DVDs. I went ahead and bought one, just couldn't help it.
My picks but maybe not for everyone (and in no order):
Night of the Living Dead (original, not that remade crap)
Mother's Day
Re-Animator
Maniac (1980)
Evil Dead
And that should be the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Accept no substitutes.

If she has Evil Dead, get her Army of Darkness. Its the 3rd movie in that set, it follows Evil Dead 2 (<- sucks imo), which takes place in the same location as Evil Dead 1. Army of Darkness he is sent back into the days of knights and castles, still fighting Deadites, and makes himself a mechinical hand in a Blacksmith shop...
well if you want:
1. slasher
2. gore
3. twisted, and
4. mind trip
then treat her to the graphic Rob Zombie movie "House of 1000 Corpses". most people don't like it, but it fits your criteria... and I was a big fan of it.
I wouldn't consider The Cell a horror movie... more of a psychological thriller, but I know what you are talking about. She might like Pink Floyd's "The Wall" then, thats got a lot of cool visuals, and its scary sometimes... and if you love Pink Floyd its even better.
Suggestions
* THE SHINING "come and play with us danny, forever, and ever...and EVER!"
* SUSPIRIA (it's all in the visuals and score.Turn out the lights..make her see it before the horrid remake comes out!)
* SILENCE OF THE LAMBS ("it rubs the lotion on it's skin!")
* AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (beware the moors!)
* CANDYMAN (makes you nervous of mirrors like being a scared kid again)
or how about "one dark night". Nothing like a bunch of girls playing a game of initiation by sleeping in a mausoleum..lol Based on a true story: "Henry, Portrait of a serial Killer"...altho this is probably too shocking, graphic and not appropriate for a birthday.
Btw. let us know what you end up choosing!

Phatasm
Pumpkinhead (first one only)
Haunted (starring Aiden Quinn)
April Fool's Day
The Fog
Night of the Creeps
Susan asked for me to post what we pick. There were some great movies listed, and many I know she has. Here is the Finals list, (in no particular order of rank) in which we will choose 5, so your help is appreciated!
-Rosemary's Baby~she has seen it and liked it,
-Army of Darkness~I know she has Evil Dead, but not sure about this one, will have to find out
-Mother's Day
-Suspira
-Phantasm~this I will definately get for it's one of the first scary ones we saw together as kids
-Haunted
-The Fog~Totally forgot about this one...thanks JohnL!
-Night of the Creeps
-Silent Night Deadly Night
Hmmm,
The original NLD, of course
The Haunting, original Robert Wise version
Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer
Midnight Lace--the opening scene still scares the s**t out of me ("Mrs. Preston . . . .oh Mrs. Preston.")
The Night Walker--1965 William Castle entry with Robert Taylor, Barbara Stanwyck, and Hayden Rourke. Kitshcy but effective
Dawn of the Dead (aka "Zombie") The original though, not the remake wich is out there since short.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (All time classic... the uncut version at least ;))
Children of the Corn (Part1, the rest sucked!)
Shining
The Fog
The Witch
Event Horizon (As much Sci-Fi as it is, it is still Hell´a Scary ;))

Night of the Living Dead
The Omen
Dawn of the Dead
Ringu (Japanese version ONLY)
The Prophecy
Loyal - can't really go wrong with anything in that list.
"Suspiria" is good, I like it. It's very weird, very visual, very graphic. Also a good pick if she hasn' seen it before, it's always fun to get something new.
Night of the Creeps is a fun b movie. It's creepy and funny..a good time popcorn flick.
MOthers day - is that the one where the hillbillies kidnap those girls? lol
I think it's good to get a couple you KNOW she likes and then get a few she may or may not have seen before. I wish I had friends who would buy me movies like that!
Pet Semetary
IT (I hate clowns)
They
Fear of the Dark
hellraiser 1
this ones are great.
- The Changeling , just a great movie.
- The other : its been years since i have seen this film and still cant get it out of my head.
- Demons: very entertainig anyway avoid the second part .
- The omen : obviously a "must seen" and a "must have"
- Hellraiser 2: its my fav of all the hellraiser series.
I totally forgot about the Changeling..with George C scott right? I loved that one and haven't seen in ages
There is one such film that deals with ghosts and such and stars Karen Black back in the 70's, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it. Anyone have ideas?
Anyone have a favorite ghost movie to share?
I bought The Changling on dvd a few months back. I liked it ok, it just didn't stand the test of time. At least for me. I ended up trading it.Sorta made me weary of buying movies that I liked 15 years ago..and literally haven't seen in that span of time.
Karen Black, ghost. Are you thinking of Amityville Horror? Was that karen black?
Then there's always THe Entity if you like ghost assault.

Haha..no that wasn't Karen Black in Amityville Horror..that was Margot Kidder (she sort of went mental there as she got older)
Karen Black was popular in the 70's, she was in 5 easy pieces with Jack Nicholson and that suspense/drama that Airplane! made fun of , but most may know her from House of a 1000 Corpses (She played the crazy mom) and still looks about the same.
Yeah but what do i know that name karen black from that i'm getting her mixed up with margot kidder?
Was she the actress in "Starman"?
No that was Karen Allen (you may also remember her from India Jones and the Temple of Doom or was it Raiders? She was the one who could drink most men under the table. :0)
Margot was Lois Lane in Superman as well as Amityville...
ah, thanks. I had to finally see who karen black was on imdb. now i totally remember her. oddly enuff from It's Alive III
I think that Karen Allen, Margot Kidder and Brooke Adams are all secretly the same person. (Have you ever seen them all together in he same place? Huh? Have you????)
Brooke Adams...I thought she was Margot kidder!! haha :0)
I kind of like 13 ghost...I thought the way they did the effects when you were seeing the ghost threw the glasses were really nice. You know you could see them but they still kind of blinked out and stuff.
