Title: My Recent Big Lots Purchases
Post by: Scott on July 30, 2004, 09:16:13 PM
Went to the store called BIG LOTS after reading an earlier post on the store. They are selling a load of MGM films on VHS for $2.00. Films you won't find at the rental store so I thought it was worth the price. Here is what I picked up:

Macho Callahan (1970) - Western. It is part of MGM's Western Legends. Never heard of it, but the story on the back looks good and you know I like my Westerns.

Angel Unchained (1970) - Biker film that I have yet to see from MGM's Midnight Movies. Looking forward to this one.

Electra Glide In Blue (1973) - Looked interesting. It's supposed to be a stylish cult film something like Easy Rider with good cinematography. Looks promising.

Macho Callahan - I saw years ago but remember little other than David Jansen and David Carradine were in it. IMDB reveals an impressive cast. It must have done well somewhere because that name "Macho Callahan" has been used in later spaghetti westerns. But this seems to be a US /Mexico co-production, one of the spaghetti western clones makes the rounds at the time, like "Hannie Caulder" or "100 Rifles".

Never heard of the second film, but I can take or leave most biker movies. "The Losers" being one of the few that I truly can say is a favorite.

Electra Glide in Blue - a neglected minor gem from the 70s, IMO. Even if you don't like the episodic plot, you can just sit back and look at how beautiful it is between the scenery and Conrad Hall's cinematography. This film so deserves a restoration and deluxe or Superbit DVD release just for the visuals, too bad it's not remembered well enough to get it or a soundtrack CD release since the music is excellent too. Don't want to say too much about it until you see it, while it has some small humorous moments, it is very jaded in true 70s style. Would make a great double feature with "Vanshing Point" or another 70s Robert Blake film, "Corky", a very depressing character study. It's a shame how Blake's life and career have turned out, considering the potential he showed as an adult actor in films like this.

ANGEL UNCHAINED - I have the "Midnight Movies" DVD double feature with CYCLE SAVAGES.  ANGEL UNCHAINED is definitely the better of the two films.  I sort of like Don Stroud.

ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE - I have a VHS copy sitting in a box somewhere.  I think this is a really good movie that not many people have seen since the 70s.  It has a great ending.

Here's a question for you Electra Glide In Blue fans. (Of which I am one.)  There's a connection between Electra Glide In Blue and of all people Frank Zappa (the genius of guitar). Know what it is?
