This was the first anime I ever saw. It was the late 70s or early 80s. Sort of a soap opera about a space ship that looked just like a regular seagoing battleship. Their biggest weapon was a beam that shot out of that hole at the front that they drop depth charges out of. There was a song that started: Oh, we're leeeaaving mother earth/da da DUM/da da da da - da deedle dum/ da da DUM...
When you mentioned the ship's cannon weapon I was going to say Robotech/Macross but the SDF-1didn't use depth charges so I don't know what it is. But Macross is a CLASSIC!
Star Blazers, AKA Space Cruiser Yamato. A classic.

Star Blazers sounds right, I knew it was probably something kind of generic since I didn't remember the name. I don't remember much else about it, except at the time it seemed really weird for the people to have such small noses.
There weren't a lot of anime shows here in the US from that time period, at least not that were widely seen. I can only think of a handful;
Gigantor
Battle of the Planets
Star Blazers
Voltron
Voltron rocked! I used to LOVE that show!
