Title: the new twilight zone

Do you think the new series of the twilight zone is better than the previous series.

OK, I must be REALLY out of the loop!  When and what channel do you watch these remakes???  I love the original and always watch any of the marathons they have.  Been getting more into the old Outer Limits too...some great, but cheezy special effects!

You're what messageboard people call a "troll", right? lol

You can't be serious. The new TZ was a half-assed disgrace compared to the old series.

Which new series do you mean bouncer?
The one from the 80s or the recent one from UPN?
IMO the one from the 80s, while it had a very different feel from the original, was still a fine series in its own right.
The recent one on UPN with Forest Whittaker hosting I didn't care for too much. Whittaker just didn't have that edgy quality that Rod Serling had. The stories I saw also struck me as a bit predictable.

The original.  There is NO comparison.

Both new versions were weaker than the original, but at least the 80s version could surprise you with a treat here and there.

The two I remember than I thought were worthy of the original were one about an alcoholic who goes to see a man about an questionable alcoholism treatment. The man swallow something (a pill IIRC) only to find out afterward that it contains a hatchling of a nasty little creature that feeds on alcohol. It causes him agonizing pain when it wants to feed, if he drinks the pain subsides as the creature hibernates once it is fed, but it also grows. The man is told that if he can resist the pain for long enough the creature will cease to grow and go back into hibernation, and will stay that way as long as he never drinks again. If not it will continue to feed and grow until it kills him. He beats his addiction after a huge struggle, and is seen at the end in a bar handing out cards to recruit others to try the mysterious "cure".

The other was about a man in a near future America where he is convicted of a crime and senteced to one year of being marked with a symbol that will tell all others to shun all contact with him, to treat him as if he doesn't exist. He will live and function in the outside world but be unable to interact with anyone. Of course he thinks it will be easy but it isn't, apparently interacting with the "shunned" is a severe criminal offense as well. Eventually he becomes some desperate for human interaction, he treis to befriend a blind man, until the blind man turns on him when he finds out what the man is. Finally, when his sentence is over, he is grateful to rejoin society, but a little while later he sees a woman who has been sentenced to the same punishment. He has enough and hugs her yelling to anyone that will listen that she exists and he sees her. As the camera pulls back we see lots of automated flying police robots swarming on the scene announcing that he has commited a crime and will be punished.

"Invisible!" I remember that one. it has always stuck with me.   The 80's TZ did a lot of classic sci-fi short stories, "The Last Defender of Camelot" comes to mind.  There were some real gems in there.

The first story you mention is "The Hellgrammite Method".
The second is "To See the Invisible Man" based on the short story by Robert Silverberg.
"The Hellgrammite Method" is one of those I've missed seeing from the 80s version. I wish TNT would start showing it again.

The original was great and scary so was The new Twilight Zone in the 80's was a little but the same. I didn't like The New New Twilight Zone ether it was stupid and lame.

Thanks for the titles of the stories, I'm awful with the titles of episodes of series, and usually too lazy to look for online episode guides.

>I wish TNT would start showing it again.

I wish TNT would show the original episodes rather than the chopped up versions. When the show first aired on network TV, each episode was an hour long, but had shorter stories within it. They were free to make the stories as long or as short as they wanted. Unfortunately, when the show went into syndication, all episodes were cut to 30 minutes. Stories that were too short to make into a half hour show were scrapped and stories that ran longer than 30 minutes were seriously cut down.

Aparently the show was released on laserdisc in Japan, but not in the US. :(

The best place to go for episode guides is usually TV Tome (http://www.tvtome.com).

No, that series premiered in 2002. There's some comments about it earlier in the thread.

I just picked up the original Twilight Zone Collection One at Wal Mart and next to it on the shelf was this New Twilight Zone collection. (the one hosted by Whittaker)

I picked it up and was like, "What the hell is this?"
I had never even heard of it.

What channel was this show shown on?  Did you say UPN?
I have cable, I channel surf all the time and I've never seen it on TV
Then again, we don't get UPN here.

First time i ever saw it, it was on this afternoon on either UPN or WB (i don't have cable so that narrows it down on which channels it was) The episode was about some little girl who turned all her babysitters into barbie dolls. It was really lame and a shame they slapped the twilight zone name on it along with the 'created by rod serling' (as if he had anything to do with this creation)

I recently bought the original twilight zone collection 1 myself off of amazon last week. now i want them all ;-)

How much did you pay for yours Susan?

I found mine at Wal Mart for $44.98

It's over $80 at every other website I've seen.

Are you talking about the Collections 1-5?  Walmart website lists them for the same ballpark price as amazon.

Yep.
THIS IS WHAT I BOUGHT (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000714AP/qid=1095632160/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/002-7325377-9948837?v=glance&s=dvd)

I have a feeling my local Wal MArt screwed up the price and marked it wrong.
I got the entire Collection 1for $45
When I saw it on the shelf for that price, I just figured it had recently dropped in price.
Apparently not.

The New Twilight Zone with Forest Whitaker was on UPN. It followed Star Trek: Enterprise on Wednesdays in most places. The episode Susan mentions was "The Collection".

Yes, the UPN version of The twilight Zone ran for one season on UPN. Some of the episodes were ok, like the sequel to It's a Good Life, It's Still a Good Life, starring Billy Mumy as a grown up Anthony.
