I finally remembered another really great plain ol' "ghost" movie -- Susan's thread got me scratchin' my noggin -- "Haunted"(1997), with Aidan Quinn & John Geilgud & a bunch o' British actors - It is, indeed, an English production.
It's a terrific variation on the old "Is this place really haunted or are the ghosts psychological?" theme. The ending is so very over-the-top, it had both my wife & myself screaming "NO!!" when we watched it together.
Totally unreal -- and I mean that in a good way.
No vampires, no slashers, no warlocks, no monsters. Just plain old fashioned creepy icky slimy disgusting ghost(s).
See it this Halloween, if you haven't already!

It is called the haunting with catharine zeta jones in a old haunted house.I seen it a few years back.
Is it the Zeta Jones one? Isn't that the one with all those computer graphics? I don't think that is the one Peter Johnson is talking about.

When I think of some of these movies I absolutely CAN NOT leave out some of the excellent collection of this genre by Hammer Films in England.
Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee of course did their fair share as the best known actors in the Hammer archives.
There was one movie by Hammer that neither one of them were in about vampires. The one thing I remember most is where the "hero" gets trapped and the other vampires have their vampiress come up to him in order to get ready to bite. This knock out brunette didn't do it real quick. She came at him real slow. All I know is that as a kid, I wanted to be in his shoes real bad. Real bad.
Anyway, he got loose and got away before she could bite.
What a babe she was, and ever since no other vampire movie has ever impressed me.

No, that's "The Haunting," with Zeta-Jones and Liam Neeson, and it absolutely SUCKED. One of the worst big-budget films of the 90s. It was a remake of a supposedly excellent movie of the same title that was made in the early 60s. I have yet to check out the original "The Haunting" but it's on my list. I think it was finally released on DVD last year. The movie "Haunted" (as referred to in the original post of this thread) starring Aidan Quinn does exist. Look it up on Amazon. I have vague memories of possibly seeing this movie but can't remember for sure. Sounds like a good one though.

I thought it was a great movie too. Very atmospheric.
It's great twist is that some of the characters you think are real people at the begining of the film turn out to be ghosts themselves -- I know that's a spoiler, but it won't ruin the movie for you -- lots of other surprises --

I don't think so -- Quinn plays an investigator that's called out by the caretaker of an ancient household to try to do something about ghostly phenomena plaguing the place. He does fall for a sexy young thing while there. Gueilgud plays the village physician. Chilling stuff, keeds . ..

Sorry to disagree with you, but I think that WOULD ruin the movie for me, if I hadn't already seen it. I had no clue up until the end, and that's the major revelation of the film. In my opinion, knowing that in advance changes the movie.
I'm going to put this film on my list. Sounds like a good one.

Still, however, it can be admired for its art -- I mean, you don't turn away from watching Hound of the Baskervilles because you know what the man in the portrait means . . . or is that another spoiler?

This sounds more like Ghost Story from the 80s which had a lot of old actors in it. Most of them died before it was released. I think Fred Astair was in it too.
