Title: Sea Lab 2021
Post by: lester1/2jr on September 09, 2004, 12:41:55 PM
http://www.adultswim.com/shows/sealab/

caught this while up late the other night. It was very funny.  Erik Estrada even does one of the voices.  on the cartoon network.  I'm not into cartoons at all and I liked it

By far one of the funniest shows on TV along with Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Which episode did you see?

The show is still good, but not as great as it's original season.  The show lost a major component when Harry Goz died.

FIGNUTS!

If you like the show, you can buy the first season on DVD now. It was just released not too long ago.

I love the show- second to "Aqua Teen Hunger Force". "I, Robot" is my favorite "Sealab 2021" episode... but there are a few other close seconds.

Like all Adult Swim shows, "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" is hit-and-miss. The best episode, in my opinion, is "Bus of the Undead." "PDA" is also great. And there's an episode about the Internet, and pop-up windows, but I can't think of the name of it... those are all must-see episodes.

I liked "Sealab 2021" from the get-go. I had to warm up to ATHF, but consider myself a fan now. But I agree that both can be hit or miss. For all the eps of 2021 I like there are a few like "Uh-oh" (basically a moebius strip musical loop branching off from characters saying just that) and the blackout episode (next to no animation, just an exterior shot of Sealab with the windows dark as the characters argue and badmouth Pod 6 yet again), even the Adult Swim title cards included the line "Looks like somebody phoned it in this week."

But then they do cool stuff like the Bizarro episode, the Cold War spoof (Sealab vs. the USA with a Kennedy-type prez), the Asteroid Smasher/HDTV (spoofing channel surfing and Adult Swim, loved their take on Brak), or the one wher Capt. Murphy finally got to become a Barbeaubot like he always wanted. Also love any episode with a Grizzlebees reference.

And didn't realize just how much Harry Goz made the show work until he was gone.
Estrada has his moments like when he was flexing for White Debbie when she wanted to have a baby (doing The Latinator) or the show within a show epsiode where he was secretly running a dolphin/tuna canning operation in his trailer.

Fignuts...........

Yaddo,

Yeah, it is kinda strange to watch the newer episodes without Goz.  Tornado Shanks is no substitute for Murphy.

I've actually been quite suprised at how good this new season has gone.  It's been hilarious from the start.

Debbie almost marrying Hesh.

Everyone declaring their own nation in Sealab.

It just sucks not to see Murphy on there anymore.  The character of Murphy seemed to get more laughs out of me than anything else, except for the French guy in the episode about the Easy Bake Oven.  Now that is classic!

The "Fantastic Voyage" take-off where Black Debbie was going to give Shanks sympathy sex because of his tumor was a favorite of the recent ones. maybe it was all the blood spraying. I'd still rank the HDTV episode a little higher, but those two are my favorite post-Murphy eps.

I need to see the Debbie wedding ep again, I missed part of it I think.

It was strange to notice how often they've recycled the body for Gay Guy Lance for various characters. Just when I thought they were using guys with receding hair and Abe Lincoln beards a lot.

I have missed the HDTV episode each time that is has aired.  Hopefully I'll be able to check it out soon.

I agree with what you said about Uh-Oh being one of the better original episodes.  We even get a little bit of Chopper Dave in that one.

So, is it me or does anyone else see Harry Knowles on that show like all the time?  You know, the guy who owns aintitcoolnews.com.

He was in Tourist Season and they even had a kid look like him in the episode where Quinn was teaching the students.  I think the kid's name was "Fatass McBloblicuss" if I'm not mistaken.

Look for the now damaged Bebop Cola machine sitting in a darkened corner during the HDTV episode. Nice to see it turn up yet again (third time I think).

Trying to remember if I saw a Knowles type lurking in some shots, just as long as they do something awful to the character I'll be happy.

I know that it made a big appearance in the "Return To Oblivion" epsiode where they were going behind the scenes of the shooting of the "All That Jazz" episode.

As for Harry Knowles, I believe that having his name be "Fatass McBloblicuss"  and having Tornado Shanks yell at him to go clean the ham out of his ears was harsh.

Especially when Sealab shows it's true genius by having "Fatass" mumble:

"I do have ham in my ears....." in the background.

Yeah, I love that show.  My favorite ep. is where they have that kid who's taking advantage of the Make A Wish Foundation.  They ask him what's wrong with him and he's like "I, um, uh, uh..." and that girl says "Oh jeez, he's dying and he has a speech impediment too.  Oh well, at least the kids in school won't be able to make fun of you anymore."  Or something like that.  And everybody calls him "the little dying kid" or something.  They are just so sarcastic.  Then there's that one where an invisible moster is after them and they wrap the fat kid in T-bone steaks to act as a lure.  But the monster befriends him, but then turns on him.  The fat kid is like "But I thought we were friends?"  And the monster's like "It's your fatness that makes you think dumb things."  There was a hilarious scene with the doctor in that one as well.  Some guy is attacked by the monster and his face is ripped off.  Everyone gasps in horror and says "Where's his face?"  And the doctor's like "Oh, I imagine it's somewhere in the monster's lower intestine about now.  Or maybe in his gullet.  I am not an expert on the digestion process of monsters."

Can't believe I forgot to mention the episode where Murphy adopts those marshmallow puff looking things.

What were they called?  Bloofs or something like that.  They are always farting and can change into different forms.  Eventually Murphy gets brainwashed by them.  Great episode!

I use to watch those all the time during th end of my college years 2001-2002 with my roomies.  All I remember then was The Brack Show, Home Movies (which I loved), Space Ghost Coast to Coast (but saw that far before adult swim-great stuff), Sealab 2021,and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.  I know there have been more additions and will have to check it out.

Anyone have any fav's I haven't mentioned?
