Title: Spawn of Satan DVD set
Post by: Ozzymandias on September 10, 2004, 02:45:08 AM
I paid $6 at Best Buy for a two DVD-four movie set called "Spawn of Satan."

So far I've only watched two of the movies. One is called "Night of the Beast" (Luka's Child).  A devil worshipping horror film producer has his son, who looks like a deranged Dennis Miller, kidnap actresses ( aka: scantly clad bimbos) to feed to his other son, who is a red gargoyle. The missing girls are tracked down by a detective who looks like a cross between James Brolin and Brian Ferry of Roxy Music. He doesn't solve the crime until two little boys manage to sneak in unnoticed (guess devil worshipers aren't very observant).

The other is a video production called "Night Crawlers" kind of a Lovecraftian story about ancient space creature who burrows beneath a small town killing people. What hurts "Night Crawlers" is it is on video, so it looks like, speaking from experience, a media majors class project (although a very good one). Also the creature looks waaaaay too phony.

I'll get back to you when I watch the other two movies. For $6 it's not bad.

I watched a third feature on the DVD.  A pretty good film called The Screaming. I rank it above the other two because the acting was convincing, the script was creative (vampire lore mixed with a satire of Scientology), and one scene actually gave me a scare. The only problem was the special effects varried great to goofy. The Claymation demon and melting dolls impailed on shish-kabob skewers were too funny.

One more feature to watch.

I know this has become a thread all to myself but I thought I should give report on this DVD set for those who might consider buying it.

I watched the second video taped feature called "Hellspawn."  All I can say is somewhere in the Afterworld, Andy Milligan and Ed Wood are laughing and saying "I could do better than that."

Many of the same people who were in the "Night Crawlers" feature on the DVD are in this. It starts off with a woman giving birth to a demon that looks more like a Halloween decoration (on a stick). It kills a priest and it's parents and then flees.

I had a hard time telling what went on from there because YOU CAN'T HERE THE DIALOG. There is a loud hum on the track as if the microphone was only half-way plugged in. Speaking of Milligan, they used the same bad stock music to score the film. It doesn't drowned out the voices of the actor, because the microphone didn't pick up their lines anyway.

I do believe the little Halloween decoration grew up to be a guy in a halloween mask, who likes to cuddle and rock baby doll when he isn't killing people and digging up graves (AAHHHHH). I swear at one point, when the microphone half way works, he tries to force one of the characters to read him a bedtime story.  This is after the monster puked pork and beans on the poor guy's head (this is the best special effect in the movie).

Also include is a redneck who cusses a TV reporter when interviewed about seeing the monster (one of the few parts you can hear).  I believe the redneck is a friend of the monster someway, but I could hear their discussion.

Most movies have a climactic battle with the monster. This movie has about four climactic battles. I was confussed which battle actually killed the monster.

In conclusion, I got two fairly good movies out of four at six bucks. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to buy this.

Sounds like a Brentwood DVD set. It's always fun to go through a set of 4-10 film set and see what you have found. Once in a while you will pick a title you never heard of and it turns out to be quite good. After buying a few sets you start to find other sets that you want,  but the set will include to many films that you may have seen already. I usually know what I'm looking for, but once in a while I'll take a chance on something. Always like to find a good Euro-shocker amoungst a set of 4-10, but I've closed my list down to about 100 films yet to view and have a good idea about what to look for from each genre. Building a list and doing some research on different film genres helps me pick them better, but occasionally a wild title at $2 or $3 will tempt me to purchase an unknown title without doing my homework.
