Title: What Film Does This Happen In?
Post by: Ash on September 20, 2004, 01:30:36 AM
Ahhh!!
This is driving me nuts.

A few buddies and I were discussing movies recently.

We remembered a film where the villain eats Oreo cookies but we can't remember what film it was.

Anyone?

Rounders maybe?  The way the poker playing antagonist ate his Oreos was his tell.

Ah!  That's it!

How could I have forgotten John Malcovich as Teddy KGB?
That was one of the best card movies I've ever seen.
Matter of fact, I think I'll go buy it today or tomorrow.

Thanks for the info!

There are card movies? Somehow I missed this whole genre. Is there a standard formula, like sports movies?

I fully expect people to start making more of these to take advantage of the current poker craze.  So far, as far as I know, the only one is Rounders, although it isn't a very accurate portrayal according to what I've read--no professional player would play the way the main character does in that movie, and one writer noted that just because a person can bluff a world-class player out of one pot doesn't mean that they can actually play at that level.  In real life, the sharks of the Vegas poker world would send Damon's character home broke in a matter of months.

The more accurate portrayal is the Joey Knish character, who I believe was based on a real-life player.

Well, the formula is to take your clothes off, one at a time . . .

No! I don't know how accurate it is, but if one is interested in movies about poker, one might try, some of which I have seen,  1965's "The Cincinnati Kid," w/  Steve McQueen, Edward G. Robinson, Ann-Margret, Karl Malden, Tuesday Weld, Joan Blondell, Rip Torn, Jack Weston, and Cab Calloway. It is suppose to be to poker what "The Hustler" was to pool. And, anyway, with a cast like that, the acting has to be terrific in it.
