Title: Movies you can watch over.. And over.. And over.
Post by: Jim Hepler on October 22, 2001, 04:02:37 AM
Well, I recently bought a portable SVCD/VCD/MP3 player (with a 5" TFT screen of course..), and of course I own no VCDs except for the two it came with (Meet the Parents, and an awful quality VCD of a pirate The Mummy Returns).  Soooo..   I need suggestions for movies to convert to the format.  Hard-Boiled (perenial action classic) is done already.  Upcoming movies to do:

Die Hard
Evil Dead 2
Army of Darkness
Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Now then, considering all told each VCD will take around 6-8 hours from conversion to burning (as well as costing about $1 for two CDs), I'd like suggestions of movies that can be watched many times and never get old.  I think the 4 I'm going to be doing soon enough meet that description.  Generally, these have to be movies on DVD (preferably not to hard to find), since my capture card is so crappy I'd rather not consider using it.

Well people, can you help me out?

Well, this is an individual taste, of course, but I'd nominate The Great Escape and The Good The Bad & The Ugly.

And Zulu, whenever a decent disc comes out.

Ah,yes, oh great one! The DVD of Good, Bad, Ugly is great. And with 14 minutes  of excised Italian Language Footage from the Euro release! Still, I'd pick the First two of Clint's Leone' masterpieces. Personal tastes being accepted....Action: The Dirty Dozen + Patton .  Comedy: Young Frankenstien + Airplane! . Daikaiju: Original Godzilla + D. All M.s. Spegetti W. : For a Fistfull of Dollars + For a Few Dollars More + Django.  Animated(U.S.) Buzz lightyear OF Star Command + A Bug's Life + Both Toy Stories. Anime: Patlabor 1 and 2 . .....thats it for now!

Off the top of my head, I would list Falling Down, Vanishing Point, The Great Escape, Star Wars, Pumping Iron, Smokey and the Bandit and any 80s Schwarzenegger pic (Conan, Terminator, Commando, Running Man, Predator, etc.) These are some of the movies I can watch over and over.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Yeah, I might do that one.  A personal fave, but it I'm not so sure it'll convert well to a 5.5" screen...

The Dirty Dozen + Patton.  Good movies the both, same problem.

Young Frankenstien + Airplane!

GREAT suggestion!  Especially airplane.  Hehe, I'll watch on the plane!  :D

Original Godzilla

Hrm...  I'll have to think about that one.  Not that I don't luv the big liz.

: For a Fistfull of Dollars + For a Few Dollars More + Django

I dunno if I'll be able to find Django, but the first two will probably have the same problem as the GB&U.

Magnificent Seven
Star Wars
Spaced Invaders

To bad the only version of Star Wars available is a pirate DVD which is next to impossible to find in an actual store (waiting for the official upcoming release).  :(

Star Wars was one of the first flicks I thought of.  Magnificent Seven..  I like it, but I don't think enough.  Same with Spaced Invaders.

Top Fighter

Sounds interesting.  Might check that one out.  No clue where to get it though.

Dawn of the Dead

EXCELLENT suggestion..  Now just to find a DVD somewhere..

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  Any more?

Don't know if you like wrestling at all or not, and its not really a movie, but some of my favorite DVDs are my FMW and ECW Wrestling DVDs. Especially the FMW matches, with electrified barb wire, exploding rings, lots of fireballs, barb wire, blood, scythers, knifes, axes and so on. I've seen some of the FMW women take more of a beating then 90% of the guys in America.

Yes to all the Italian stuff -- but you really need to go forward into the Past a bit more:
Metropolis
Modern Times(Chaplin)
Young Sherlock(Keaton)
Seventh Seal
Lawrence of Arabia
Dr. Zhivago
Bridge on the River Kwai
Hunchback of Notre Dame(Chaney)

These are all films that can be watched 10 times or more and reveal something new each time.  Well worth saving --
Oh, and from Hammer:
5 Million Years to Earth
Horror of Dracula

These ain't in the same league, of course, but I can certainly watch these 10 times or more . . .
