Title: I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE (1958)
Post by: The Burgomaster on October 03, 2004, 06:53:25 AM
You might enjoy this old-fashioned, black & white, 1950s sci-fi flick.  The plot is sort of like INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, but is told from a woman's point of view.

Young bride Gloria Talbot suspects that her husband (Tom Tryon, who later went on to write the creepy novel THE OTHER, which was made into a movie in 1972) is an alien.  Before long, some of the other men in town start acting strange and the feeling of paranoia grows.

The movie is fairly low-budget (there are only about a dozen people in the cast, and most of the scenes take place either in the couple's living room, a local bar, or in the forest), but Gloria Talbot is fine playing the female lead and the movie is generally fun to watch.  (Especially when the aliens show up . . . typical 1950s space monsters who glow and shoot rays that disitigrate people!)

This is available on a high-quality, widescreen DVD and is a welcome addition to my collection.

They remade this in 1998 as a tv movie on UPN with Richard Burgi and Susan Walters playing the couple.  The aliens needed to breed with humans to save their race and they had the real guys stashed in a cloaked ship or something.

I've been wanting to see the original I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE for years now, but haven't been able to find a copy to rent and it hasn't been on TV over the past few years anyway. If anyone ever hears of it coming on TV let me know.

Seen both versions, the original is a great 50s aliens as proxies for communists scifi paranoia tale, an excellent product of its times. The remake played out like a really long, really dull episode of the new "Outer Limits" series.

Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron are in a really terrific remake that got absolutely no attention when it was released.
I watched it again recently on disc.  Years before the serial-killer-whore thing she got an Oscar for, Theron was showing incredible acting chops as she doubts her own sanity as she suspects that Depp ain't the man she married . . . Brilliant!

I thought the Depp version THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE was pretty good, but not great.  But, then again, I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE wasn't great either.

Awesome little flick.  Great acting, tight direction, and short enough to mix with the original Body Snatchers for a three hour doppleganger double feature.

As luck would have it, this is currently on TV.  In fact, it comes on Today, Tuesday the 5th, on Thriller Max  at 4:05 pm Eastern.  You can also catch it on Thriller Max on the 15th of October at 10:00am Eastern.

Word of warning, the '98 remake is absolute garbage.  But this original is highly recommended.

I always thought THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE was more of a cross between THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT and ROSEMARY'S BABY than IMAMFOS.
