Title: The LOOKER Gun
Post by: Ash on October 07, 2004, 04:02:04 AM
Anyone here remember the 1981 film "Looker" starring Albert Finney and directed by Michael Chrichton?

I've been searching the web for pics of the light gun in that film.
They called it the "L.O.O.K.E.R. Gun" and if someone shot you with it, you get hypnotized for up to 2 hours.
If I remember correctly, it also rendered the gun weilder invisible to the victim.

Do any of you remember what L.O.O.K.E.R. stood for?
Can you find a pic of the gun online?
I've been having a heckuva time finding anything.

I've only been able to find this one animated pic and even it doesn't show the gun close up.

What did you think of that film?

Crichton sold out in his later days, but he was always ahead in the technology department.  I remember that Albert Finney was a plastic surgeon  who kept getting these models for patients and they had specifice mearsurements for everything they wanted done (down to the millimeter).  They started getting murdered so the cops start  looking at Finney.

I can't remember the name of the company, but it was run by James Coburn (one of his last performances before he dropped out of acting for about a decade).  They were scanning the models into a computer for use as virtual models for their commercials.  I don't remember why they were killing them though. I know they were going to broadcast the LOOKER  signal during commercials to give post hypnotic suggestions about who to vote for.

I remember Finney is getting ice cubes when he gets shot with the gun and when he snaps out of it water is everywhere from the freezer defrosting. I seem to remember  him beiing in a car chase and getting shot and ending up in fountain.

The funny part was toward the end when the bad guy is chasing him around with a real gun in the sets for the virtual commercials.  They were showing how it  worked to some advertisers and here are Finney and the bad guy creeping around among the virtual actors. In fact Finney kills they guy and he's laying across the kitchen table bleeding while Mom and the kids are smiling about the cereal they are advertising.

I thought it was a pretty good movie. It was a big deal because Susan Dey was in it and it was the first major thing she was in since the Partridge Family.

I always sorta liked this movie.   Especially the light gun.

I heard that in the final cut of the film, they gave no reason at all why the bad guys were trying to kill Susan Dey.
