Title: Neil Innes!! Neil Innes!!
Post by: peter johnson on October 21, 2004, 07:03:19 PM
Vermin, especially, should get a kick out of this:
Neil Innes of The Bonzo Dog Band is doing a solo show not far from here in the small town of Greeley, Colorado, on the 30th in a 200-seat theatre!
I have front row center:  101-A
For those of you who don't know the name, Neil was the primary minstrel that followed Eric Idle around in Monty Python and The Holy Grail, singing the "Bravely ran away" song.  He also was featured in Monty P. at the Hollywood Bowl, a lot of the TV episodes, was one of the musicians who sang "Death Cab for Cutie" in the Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour" film, collaborated with all the Beatles in solo projects, did The Rutles and Rutland Weekend Songbook, also with Eric Idle, worked with Keith Moon, Eric Clapton, and the whole who's who of British rock in the '60's & is one funny fellow.
I cannot wait!!
Check out the numerous Bonzo Dog Band websites and/or go buy a copy of Gorilla or Let's Make Up and Be Friendly to see what I'm raving about.

That would be great to see. I'm producer of an oldies/nostalgia radio show in Missouri and I use as a commercial bumper the begining of "Intro and Outro" by BDB.

Funny you should mention it-- I saw him in Arlington, MA (just outside of Boston) a couple weeks ago. You're in for a treat; the man puts on an amazing show, with just the right balance between playing the favorites, new material, and stories about shenanigans with the Bonzos, Pythons, and Beatles. And hearing a crowd sing along to "Cheese and Onions" is simply priceless.

"They are Robin's minstral...and there was much rejoicing."(Hurray)...

Vermin, as usual, beats me to the punch --
Well, good to know it's going to be great!  'Still can't wait -- and, really, I think the 200-seat deal is a wonderful idea -- more intimate, like a big living-room rather than an echoey concert hall.  Maybe they're charging more for the seats than if it were to be in a larger venue, but so much the better!
Was he approachable, Vermin?  Did you see anyone going for, or did you go for, autographs?  Shoot, I'm bringing the chapbooks from Gorilla and Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse/Urban Spaceman & a felt-tip pen.  And a camera.
Full-tilt fanboy Boogie, moi!!

I didn't stick around for an autograph-- public transportation shuts down early in Boston, and we needed to make sure we had a ride back into the city-- but he certainly seemed approachable. I did buy a CD and pin from (I think) his wife during intermission, and she was very nice. The crowd was definitely digging it-- it was pretty evenly split between fans from back in the day and college kids. The Bonzos seem to still be gaining fans-- a few days later, I went to Newbury Comics (a local chain of impossibly hip record stores) wearing the pin, and the kids working the counter went nuts over it!

When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought it was some German Nazi phrase being yelled out loud!
