Title: The Cell (2000)
Post by: Scott on October 23, 2004, 10:01:12 PM
THE CELL (2000) - Jennifer Lopez stars in the bizarre and creepy film that loses a lot by switching back an forth between real world and a mental world of some type. You might like this one if you like strange images that this film does provide. Sci-Fi Channel showed it tonight.

*Warning: discussing spoilers*

It loses its way too many times. And is it me or in the end they just solve the whole thing by investigating some evidence, making the whole trip into the villain's mind useless? So we had to endure all those crappy "artistic" nightmares for nothing? Ahhhhh....

I watched a little bit of it.  Some of the visuals were quite nice and original.

I disagree.

I don't think the film loses anything.   It falls in line with other films like it such as EL TOPO, ALTERED STATES and a few others.

With films like these you shouldn't go in expecting anything.  Just let it carry you.  These films deal with the bizarreness of the inner world of the psyche.  The psychotropic landscape.

The movie is very visually stunning.  The costuming is utterly fabulous.   Jennifer is gorgeous and Dinofrio is fabulous.

The story was useless, but I agree that the images were very  interesting.

Pretty much.

It's been awhile, but I really liked this picture.
I'll have to take your word for it that the mind-trips were useless, as I really can't remember.
I love Dorniforio in everything he's ever done & I really think poor Jennifer Lopez has an undeserved bad rap on her acting.  She's quite good in this, and really excellent in that Jack Nicholson film "Blood and Wine", with Michael Caine.  She can do a good job, she just needs decent direction.
I love the part in this where Doniforio comes sweeping down the stairs with the curtains of the room embedded in his back like enormous wings --
You don't see that on the streetcorner every day . . .

I always thought the scene where the horse gets cut up by the glass panels and is still living was pretty cool.

Lopez doesn't get any kind of useful information from her trips into his mind. She ends up trapped there, so the cop goes in to snap her out of it. While he's there, he sees a strange symbol carved into a wall/sculpture/whatever. He then remembers seeing that symbol on a piece of equipment in the killer's lair. He tracks down the company that made it, finds out who they sold it to, finds out that they own a piece of property out in the country, goes there, finds the girl and saves her. So the only thing the trips into the killer's mind accomplished was to remind the cop that he completely overlooked a crucial piece of evidence.
