This was a LOT creepier than I thought it would be. It was actually a fun movie-going experience... the theater was packed and everyone was screaming at the same parts (screams, then laughter because they screamed in public).
I can truly say that no movie has creeped me out this much, maybe, ever. I won't get into it because I don't want to spoil it, but this movie takes away your "safe place" (the one constant place you can go where the boogeyman can't get you).
So just remember that, if you see this, you have no happy place to go to if you find yourself with a japanese curse.
Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed that. I agree. Don't get involved in Japanese curses friends! They are vicious.
I enjoyed this one. It was far from perfect and featured a few cheap jump scares, but it established an atmosphere of trouble and "wrongness" early on that didn't really let up until the crappy, obvious ending. I also watched the original Japanese film, and I can honestly say that the remake was better, despite its flaws. More cheap pops and stupid character moments (just BURN the house, you idiot, do NOT go investigate the strange noise in the bathroom), but also a much more tangible sense of dread and a more fully developed plot. (I loved the broken sequential chronology, by the way.) Perfectly understandable, given the fact that the director has had a year to fine-tune the whole package, as well as a bigger budget, which really does make ghost attacks and shadowy figures on videocassettes far more effectively scary. Far better than The Ring, although my dislike of that movie may be due in part to the disproportionate hype and lavish praise it received comparative to its overall mediocrity.
Argh.
I'm sick of hearing praise about this flick. My wife and I checked it out last week and it's awful. It's not the least bit original, uses cheap scares that do not in any way frighten, and the chonology isn't even a novelty. It's just a rehash of other better horror films.
And sadly enough, a sequel is on the way.
People are praising The Grudge? I've heard nothing but complaining about it since it came out, which may be why I was relatively happy with how it turned out - no one liked it, so my expectations were fairly low.
Yeah, I've actually been reading some good reviews from critics. Especially over at joblo.com.
I thought the acting was pretty solid throughout, and it was great to see Ivan Raimi on the screen again....it's just....it was fairly boring. And hell, I love slow films. The plot was fairly obvious and unoriginal and although it looked good, it felt like a mess.
I'm hoping to rent the original sometime soon just to see if it's any better. As for the American remake, we better get used to it. It seems that a sequel has already been greenlighted.
Weird - the most I've ever seen anyone give this one is 2 stars. Not that I put much store in critics one way or the other. The broken chronology was hardly original, true, but in this case it worked, lending the movie more of a plot than it actually had. Was Ivan in it? I'm pretty sure her boss at the social welfare center was Ted. Ah well, at least Sam was wise enough to nab the original director instead of the guy who did Mouse Hunt. I'm also somewhat interested in The Ring 2, which is being directed by the director of the original Japanese Ring movies, which were marginally better than the American remake. There's apparently a remake of Dark Water in the works as well.
Geez, all you people are crazy.. I've been hearing so many different reviews of the Grudge that I don't know who to believe.
Please answer me this... I really liked the "American" version of "The Ring" so would I like "The Grudge?" I don't much care for the Japanese versions because they're not scary...

The Ring 2 does look pretty interesting as well. The teaser on the site is quite creepy. I have yet to see any of the original Ring films other than the first being as I own it on an import DVD. Great flick which the American version surprisingly matches.
As for Dark Water, there is a remake being made. I think it might have already finished shooting. If I'm not mistaken Jennifer Connelly will be in it.
