Title: Night of the Living Dead, new colorized version
Post by: JohnL on October 25, 2004, 06:24:12 AM
Has anyone seen the new, colorized version of Night of the Living Dead? I just stumbled across this page;

Night of the Living Dead DVD comparison (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare5/nightlivingdead.htm)

Which has comparison vidcaps from the various versions, including the new colorized version. While I'm not necessarily in favor of colorizing B/W movies, I have to admit that the vidcaps look great. They're much more natural looking than past attempts at colorization. It also includes the B/W version and a commentary track by Mike Nelson.

I know this was mentioned briefly, earlier in the year, but I was wondering if anyone here had actually seen it.

I have to admit a couple of the stills in your link look pretty good, but the one of Duane Jones with the torch in the house looks terrible in color. I'd be curious to see it once to see how good or bad a job they did, but probably not enough to buy it. Since I'm not a fan of Mike Nelson, a commentary track from him holds no appeal.

Wonder if they make the same mistake the earlier colorized version did of making the first zombie a sickly green color? Thereby spoiling the shock of when his true nature is revealed. Even the first time viewer knew from the get-go he was "different" and wonder how stupid the main characters are not to notice.

If someone wants to watch it in color, fine, they have the option. But the film works best in B&W and made use of the lack of color quite effectively. The "documentary" look mentioned so often in reviews and film criticism writing for starters, the use of shadows and darkness, and the chocolate syrup subbing for fake blood. IMO, B&W is what makes the film a timeless classic of horror fandom and "high-brow" cinema.

I'm impressed with how well that looks. I thought "Off Color Films" would screw will all the colors in NOTLD just like they did with "Reefer Madness."

I'll be buying a copy of this colorized version- but only because I don't like the original film, and I'm looking forward to hearing Mike Nelson goof on it.

Yeah, I thought that one looked a little fake. Might look better in motion though.

I don't know, but I kind of doubt it.
