Title: THE TENANT (1976)
Post by: The Burgomaster on November 21, 2004, 10:00:00 PM
I really like this thriller starring Roman Polanski (who also directed it), Shelley Winters, Melvyn Douglas, Isabelle Adjani, Jo van Fleet, and Bernard Fresson.  I picked up the widescreen DVD for only $5.99!

Some people might find it boring because it's slow-paced and very "talky" (like many other foreign films).  But I think that some of the dialogue is great, the camera work is interesting, and a few scenes are downright chilling.

Here's the story: Polanski moves into an apartment in Paris.  He finds out that the former tenant, a young woman, had tried to commit suicide by jumping out of the window.  As time passes, Polanski becomes obsessed with the woman and begins taking on some of her traits.  I won't give away anything else, but I will say that the final scene is genuine nightmare material.

Again, this movie is not for everyone.  But you might want to give it a try.

Did she have a squirrel living in her attic too?

Is this the one with the creeping looking guy quickly walks across the room after the lady opens the door and the guy just stands in a dark corner of the room. This is one of the most bizarre things ever captured on film if it's the same movie.

Scott,

You are talking about The Sentinel which is by far one of the best horror films to come out of the 70s.  It's another one of those lesser know flicks that you can get on DVD for around 3-5  bucks!  Definetly worth buying.

Thanks Skaboi. Saw that scene on 100 Scariest Moments on Bravo last month and have been curious about it.

Not a problem.  Like I said, definently check it out.  Fantastic film with quite a few nightmarish scenes.
