Im thinking of replacing my VHS player and weekly trips to Hollywood Video for a DVD player and subscription to Netflix? How are they for B movies? Cheap DTVs and stupid sci-fi and such?
I made the move years ago and don't regret it....the selection is a thousand times better than Hollywood.
I checked netflix selection and was'nt impressed. But you can search titles on their website without having to subscribe.

It looks to me like the search feature is not complete for non-members
You could be right. If thats the case then I dont know what I'm talking about. : )
Good choice Fearless. I'm using Netflix right now for $17 a month you get to keep 3 films out at a time. They also have other deals. I have over 100 movies qued up on my Netflix deal. I'll probably stay with them for another 3 months. The turn over rate for a film is about a week. That gives me about 12 movies a month for $17. The selection is the very best Fearless Freep. Most of my November viewings were from Netflix. The Italian B-movies are the best. They also have a great selection from Something Weird DVD's collection.
They've got a catalogue of somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000 titles. I'm sure you'll find something of interest.
There's a few titles out there that they don't have, but they have a lot of good B-movie selection and a lot of the Something Weird titles. I've saved a lot of money on DVDs since joining them. I live near one of their distribution centers so my turnaround time is more like a couple of days. It's definitely a much better deal the closer you live to a distribution center.
Wow, wish I lived next door. I could double my movie viewing. : )
I just saw new DVD players for $29 at my local grocery store !
It is funny to think that you could be waiting to get a B movie DVD because another person on this board has it!
I looked at Netflix about a year ago and almost pulled the trigger, maybe I will do it soon.
They just lowered their prices for three-at-a-time rentals.
I just got THRILLER: A CRUEL PICTURE not too long ago. Other stuff I've rented in the past from them...CANNIBAL FERROX, EMMANUELLE IN AMERICA, all of the Herschel Gordon Lewis movies, and a lot of the other Something Weird titles.
I think they have more than enough to satisfy most B-movie fans, though one problem is that they are sometimes slow to replace titles if they come out in a new special edition, like with VIDEODROME for example.
i subscribe to netflix and that's the only way i can currently get a selection as i am currently in a small town.
PLEASE...DO NOT "replace" your vcr...for instance, the funny movie EVIL ED (reviewed by ME!!!!! at 310am.com), with all its homages to Evil Dead and countless other flicks is avaible on netflix HOWEVER the dvd version is a severly EDITED version...there is currently no option other than vhs to view this excellent flick in it's true comic gory form.
there are so many other movies that have not yet or never will be converted to dvd...off the top of my head, i don't believe that MICROWAVE MASSACRE is on dvd...the list goes on.
don't give up that vcr...it's a gateway into the mass of vhs releases that are either released EDITED on dvd or not on dvd at all.

I meant more replacing my B movie watching pattern. I'll still keep the VCR as I have old VHS tapes I don't want to re-purchase

Not to mention the fact that you can't record with a DVD player.

Brother, I wouldn't dream of getting rid of my VCR. I'll probably buy another one to keep as a standby sometime in the future, and I take good care of the one I have.
I don't think I'll ever get rid of mine but I already have DVD recording capability as will more and more people over the next few years.
>unless he gets a dvd-R player/recorder ;)
True, however they're still not as flexible as a VCR. DVD-Rs can't be erased and if they have DVD-RWs, I'm sure they're more expensive than your average video tape.
Also, I'm not an expert, but I've been hearing rumors that the new digital recorders and DVD recorders will be including some form of DRM (Digital Rights Mangling) to prevent people from recording TV shows and posting them or sharing them with others.

Netflix is awesome. They have all of Lucio Fulci's Horror classics. Nuff said...

i subscribe as well. i live in a small conservative town (culture shock after chicago) and would never get to see such cinematic genius as GG allen smearin kaka all over himself and trying to get a cab...
still, what are we gonna do about movies that are released censored on dvd as opposed to the vhs releases---like the EVIL ED i mentioned? i would love to start a business and buy rights to classics that will never see the dvd light of day and release them.
for a while i bounced around a lot of chicago suburbs that didn't have independent video retailers...so if i wanted the uncensored version of say REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, schockbuster and bollywood video be damned, thank god for NETFLIX---the D*ld* scene was enlightening. plus the NETFLIX reduced their 3 at a time price!!!!!!!

I agree, Netflix has got to be the best yet. Their selection keeps me coming back for more. "Damn, I sound like a stupid commercial."
Anyhow, independents are the best in my opinion. They usually make serious leaps and bounds that studios wouldn't dare to make.
movielink.com has all those hard to find b movies and you can have them on your hd right now

Except that it won't even let you view the site if you don't pass their broadband test. Also, according to their brief list of "advantages" they only let you download DRM (Digital Rights Mangled) files, probably in WMV (Windows Mangled Video) format, which expires after a set period of time, can't be copied, can't be moved to another system, probably can't be bought to own. BLECH!
