this is way off the beaten path but what do you all think of pornography? does anyone find it amoral? degrading to women? or are you cool with it? i'm just curious and want to get a consensus of this smart, b-movie lovin' board.

I dont find anything really wrong with porn. I never had a problem with nudity or sex before. I dont think it degrading women either because well a women wants to show her body and is comfortable with it let her. maybe because I am a man I have this opinion.

Depends on the product --
Some people have suffered and been exploited to produce some of this stuff, and others, like Ginger Lynn, seem to enjoy it and own the rights and the profits to their own products.
Then there is the boredom issue -- really, I don't think that most of the folks on this board are your quintessential porno fans as I don't think it can hold our attention spans long enough -- not unless it involves visible nylon strings attached to the jaw of a giant spider or bad UFO footage amongst the standard money shots.

I recently did a subject at uni which was on media and morality, and we studied various different perceptions of violence and sex in the media [particularly cinema] and we studied feminist porn for part of it. If ever you think that porn is just for men, made by men and catering exclusively towards men, watch the work of Catherine Briellet [I think thats how its spelt!]
Feminist porn such as this is quite a different departure from the normal bunch. What is perhaps most interesting is how all this is treated by censorship boards: movies such as Romance and Baise Moi caused many problems in getting the ratings; whilst these films may show actual sex, they aren't merely porn films. It is said that the underlying problem that the censors supposedly had with such films was not that it had sexual violence or actual sex in these films, but were challenging because women were in control, I guess, and challenged the main ideal that porn and sex is mainly a male domain.
It's worth a look into the topic if interested in porno and morality.
By UNI, do you mean University of Northern Iowa, and if so, do you live in Cedar Falls?
To address the subject at hand, I do like me some porn. As for degrading to women, that's complete bulls**t. My girlfriend likes porn more than I do.

Just because your girlfriend, and other women, like to watch porn (or even star in it) does not itself mean it's not degrading to women. It cannot be argued that SOME PORN is, in fact, degrading to women.
I recently read an article essentially on the subject of 'what's wrong with porn.' I found it interesting, because it had some arguements that were generally new to me.
The gist of it was basically that porn depicts completely unrealistic sexual attitudes, especially in women. The article was geared more toward porn addiction than 'casual' use, and suggested the following:
(a) porn depicts all woman (in the movies) as not only sexually compliant, but also willing and eager. This is hardly realistic. No one is 'in the mood' 100% of the time.
(b) mainstream porn (that not specifically made to cater to women) is very, very male centric. That is, everything in the scenes is about male pleasure (and, if you want to take it that far, male power and domination), culminating with the male orgasm(s). There is no 'cuddling' or even any semblance of 'relationship' depicting 'real life sex' afterward. Guy(s) come, scene over.
(c) The things the women do in porn are also not representative of 'real life.' This is especially true of the shock genre, where the gross-out is king. Studies have shown that most people don't do all the stuff shown in porn (though they may in fact fantasize about it).
(d) porn strongly emphasizes sex with strangers. This too, is unrealistic. Most people just don't behave this way.
Okay, so now you are probably saying, 'that's right, porn is fantasy, not real life.' True enough. The problem arises when folks (men, married men, for example) view porn and ask "why does MY WIFE not do that, or act that way?" There is very easily, especially in the genres that depict so-called real people in real situations, a transferance from 'fantasy porn' to 'my real life.'
Porn addiction is a real problem for many people. These issues are not trivial. They may not apply to anyone on this board (I certainly hope not), but it is naive to say that there is NOTHING wrong with porn.
I also read another article a long time ago that stated it quite simply: porn makes you think about sex with someone other than your partner. Again, as fantasy (especially together), that may be harmless. But, to many people, that is a path that once trodden, may well lead to the hell of divorce, broken families, custody battles and ultimately lonliness.
My girlfriend has a HUGE issue with porn. She argues it is the only part of our society that serves no purpose. Even war serves some purpose as to protect our needs (not this war), but porn is degrading to everyone it involves. The people in the industry get screwed over so many times (literally and figuratively) that there is no winner. Lives are ruined, and there is no escaping.
All of these are valid points, but I think porn is just too deeply rooted in our society to be contested. I mean, it's not like we're the only society in the world that has ever had a pornographic industry. Rome, Egypt, India, the Rennaissance. It isn't new. But it does have a new wind beneath it's sails called the internet that promotes porn to a whole new level.
After all, wasn't the internet invented for porn?
No.
Scott H.
porn serves a purpose for me
I wouldnt say it's that far off the path. Many exploitation films were at a time considered pornogrophy.
Personally as long as nobody is being forced to make it, nobody is being forced to watch it, everybody is an adult, and everybody takes a shower, who gives a damn.
i see, everyone has some interesting points, especially the feminist perspective.
and i see how it could be a threat to someone who is married and reads to deep into it. i think a lot of porn is hilarious just how bad the acting is and the implausibility of it all. so i don't see how anyone could take it that seriously beyond the surface. but then again i love films like Jack Frost and Escape 2000, perhaps i'm jaded to bad taste.
but i think what it comes down to is if you're mature enough to make sound decisions and don't take it seriously than you're straight (on the right path). last weekend i rented a porn, only my second one, pretty impressive for 24 huh?! i live in a town where most of the women don't like military guys, there's a low population, and the only place to meet a women is at church or any of the local meat shacks. so i don't see the problem with lonely guys renting the stuff. and if some hidy-tidy moral crusader points their finger at me: then i guess that's their bag.
ok...so nobody picked up on my MAX H. reference (i won't spell out the whole name, this is a family website) but when "porn" turns into women with speculums holding their privates open while a man urinates into the oriface while said woman drinks her own urine from a length of tube, we have gone from porn to utter and complete desolation.................................we ain't talking playboy or even penthouse urination fetishism....

Some of the stuff marketed as 'adult' is not porn (ie, sexual) at all. And some is, in fact, very degrading to all concerned (including the women). Personally, I just cannot for the life of me figure out why some of those people do some of the things they do; the money ain't THAT GREAT, and even if it were, money ain't everything.
Sheesh. It truly takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.
Thanks, Mr. H, for that visual image...
so do we have a few memberships Mr. Henry? ;) geez! and i thought i had some wierd fantasies. i guess if you're ever feeling too sleazy just take a trip through the degenerate e-world of real off-the-beaten-path sexual deviations, then you'll feel better!
I'm sure there are some people out there who are actually aroused by that type of porn, but I think for most its appeal is just the gross-out factor more than anything sexual.
I'm married and do watch porn on occasion, though a lot less than I did when I was single. I tend to favor 70s era stuff, though I like some of the amateur stuff that's out there today. I try to stay away from internet porn just because so many of the sites are sketchy as far as spyware, etc...it's funny, my wife has more of a problem with internet porn. She doesn't mind me watching videos but there's something about the internet porn [probably because in a lot of cases the users are communicating with the girls on the various sites] that she doesn't like.
She made an interesting point about the "feminist porn." The people who make it seem to think that women don't enjoy watching sex unless there's a semblance of a storyline. According to my wife anyway, that's not true at all---women like watching sex as much as men do, and that's why she thinks the "women-oriented" porn has never really been that successful.
As far as porn being "unrealistic", of course it is. It's fantasy. I think that's the big appeal of it, especially for those whose sexual relationships in the real world are non-existent or unsatisfying for whatever reason.
>>>By UNI, do you mean University of Northern Iowa, and if so, do you live in Cedar Falls?
Nah just university in general, especially since I live in a complete other country! :P
I'm in Melbourne Australia at the University of Melbourne.

True. The main point of the article was that you take people with 'normal' sex lives (okay, so there's a BIG std. deviation on THAT bell curve, but so what), let's say Average Joe Married Guy. He works 40-50 hr per week, and the wife does, too. They have 2-4 kids, all running around getting into stuff. Their lives are quite busy. Their physical relationship is probably not what they would wish it to be. (Or, if you want, take the other extreme, Geeky Single Guy, who, when he goes out on Friday night without a date).
Newsflash: for most couples in this type of situation, their lives do not revolve around sex. Hopefully, most have fulfilling physical relationships (sadly, many do not).
Here's the problem: when people with normal lives hold themselves to the yardstick of what is portrayed as "normal" in porn. It's like any other escapism. It's fine to escape; it's bad when the escape becomes your reality. I think the author of the article failed to point out that this is a big issue with porn simply because sex is such a basic drive in virtually all humans. This strong drive, coupled with a very sexualized society, seems to make many of us think we have to be having (or at least thinking about) sex all the time. If we aren't, we are not cool. Or the 'in crowd.'
Getting back to that busy couple: dude starts lookin at porn, wondering why HIS life is not like that. HIS WIFE does not do ALL THAT STUFF, with THAT BIG SMILE, etc, etc, etc. For whatever reason, it seems easier with porn than with many other escapist or fantasy pasttimes to make that next step: he begins to say "there's something missing in my life, and the porn is closer to reality."
And there is a lot of porn, internet porn, designed specifically around 'looking real.' It's specifically marketed to make that leap easier to take, and therein lies the danger of it becoming addiction. Type "porn addiction" in Google and see just how big a problem it really is. Better yet, visit some of the forums and read some messages by people whose lives this addiction has affected.
It's not trivial, and should not be marginalized.
Well I've decided to mention him Mr Henry. Max Hardcore is the guy and yes I've seen him, he's really sick, the way he screws those girls, its like hes punishing and degrading them for being women. Plus he likes really young looking girls, I bet hes a pedophile.
I've always wanted to beat the crap out of him
That reminds me. I was watching Zombi4 After Death awhile ago and there was this beefy guy walking around with his shirt unbuttoned. I was laughing because I thought he looked like a gay porn star. As it turns out, after looking up the movie in a book I have on zombie flicks the guy was a gay porn star. Jeff Stryker or something. It was his attempt to break into normal movies.
I really doubt most people who watch porn think that porn is a representation of real life. I guess maybe some of the younger or less intelligent people might, but I don't think it's any more likely than people here thinking that zombie movies are real life.
I know that some people do have addiction problems with pornography but I think that has more to do with an individual's personal problems than it does with pornography itself. If most of those people weren't addicted to porn they would be addicted to something else. I think it's better if people look at porn the way they do alcohol, food, or other "addictive" substances. There are alcoholics for example, but only the most rigid moralists think booze is evil. Most people who drink don't have a problem with it. I think it's the same way with most people who "use" porn. If a person finds it is damaging their relationships with other people then yes, they probably have some kind of problem. But that's not necessarily the case with most of the people who choose to get involved with it.
My wife informs me I find it immoral and disgusting.
It's a tough subject as most were brought up in some form of family structure. The main thing is you wouldn't want to see your own family members in a porno film especially children you love. That is why many abhor these films.
I wouldn't call todays pornography filmmaking, unlike in the 70's xxx theatrical productions. From what I know of todays junk it's just one sex scene after another. This maybe more addictive, but I'm not sure. What was neat about the 70's is it had some wacky situations with at least a thread of a story that would put the average person in situations that people don't normally find themselves in, but that was the fun of it. Today it's now just one obsessive sex loop after another. The 70's is considered the Golden Age for the industy and it vanished with the advent of home video.
Most of those in the Porn industy are unfortunately into drugs and the risk for disease in great. Heard on the news that they are going to force them to wear protection now under the idea that they work for a company and must be provided safety for employees/actors/actressess.
Anytime one is aroused it is from a visual image either of the mind or on film. Either way arousal is produced by a form a porn or a mental image.
Strangely enough I think porn has helped race relations as it has helped make inter-racial relationships more acceptible in the minds of some and could be use to help promote inter-racial relationships in an indirect way.
Everything has its time and place under the sun. All things work towards the good wether it be good or not. There are two eternal qualities one called stillness and the other is motion, the riddle is to find out what lies beyond the two.

Apparently the Department of Justice and Attorney General John Asscrack. I've been seeing news stories off and on for a while now which say that his position is that *ALL* porn, even the most mainstream, plain vanilla porn you can think of, is illegal and that the DOJ has let it slide for too long. Supposedly, they're gearing up for a major crackdown on porn, both on the net and traditional forms such as magazines and video tapes. They want to bust a few high-profile producers to put a scare into the rest and hopefully force a large portion of them out of business.

Some of them enjoy it. I've seen interviews with some women who do some of the more unconventional porn and they talk about how they like getting paid to do things they enjoy and would do for free anyway.

Just download your porn from the alt.binaries newsgroups. As long as you stay away from WMV files with their ability to embed ActiveX content, you'll be fine.
