Title: Most intelligent direct-to-video b-movies?
Post by: cheecky-monley on December 16, 2004, 05:54:39 PM
My vote is for "Lifeform" (1996), a great little zero-budget movie with an excellent, intelligent script, great acting (Many of the cast members are now famous), excellent, unique creature effects, a well thought-out story .

I Zombie. Probably one of the most depressing and disturbing movies I've ever seen and they pulled it off with an almost nil budget. I dont know if I'd say it was the most intelligent but I'd say it was the most effective in what it was trying to accomplish. I remember trying to shake the mood of it days after.

Slashers. It's really bad acting and effects but the story flowed well and questions our morals when watching "reality" tv shows. Real tight story writing and te whole thing was filmed in a paintball arena, very impressive. I got it for $2 bucks. I thought it would be cheap shlock but it was really deep.

I Zombie was pretty good, although a bit slow at times. I was laughing hysterically when his penis fell off.

Oh man that scene hurt me in the worst way. I had to crack up at that one.

I've been trying to find that movie... Lifeform doesn't seem to be available on DVD yet.

Series 7: The Contenders would be the film I'd choose.  It had a very limited theatrical run (only festivals) and has made quite a home for itself on video.

It's bascially a rip on reality TV where 7 people are chosen to kill each other.  It is an amazingly hilarious film and by far one of the more intelligent films to come out recently.  Great stuff.

How about Screamers?

I loved the whole movie except the end . . . earth is about to be destroyed by the killer teddy bear . . . other than that, just about a perfect movie.

It's not on DVD yet, and it's not likely it will be for some time (it's very obscure, once sold for 92 dollars on Amazon.com!) but it's defintely a great alien flick, thought-provoking AND gory at the same time!

If you've never seen it, SciFi seems to show it every couple of months.
